Doi realized that the Japanese language was a key to understanding how Japanese people think. By studying how the verb "amaeru" and related vocabulary is used, he saw that insights could be found into psychological problems. These insights could not be discovered using German. However, even for the lay person, Doi's insights prove edifying. Those who've longed been puzzled at how Japanese people think will find their minds broadened by this book.

Quite a long read but definitely worth reading if you want to understand Japanese culture. A Japanese Psychologist I know didn't have a very high opinion of the book, but this edition includes an addendum concerning "amae" which may answer his critics and expand on the author's earlier hypothesis. It is still worth reading for the parallels and contrasts with the European cultural ethos.

I had been studying Japanese and Japan's culture for some time and a teacher mentioned this book. It is very readable, and very interesting. It is well worth getting into. I've just given a copy to my daughter who has a 6 month old baby boy.
