The Agony of Being Bullied
Those among us who have been bullied will read this heart tugger and weep with empathy, because Jodee Blanco pulls back the curtain and allows us to experience her agony as a result of being bullied. Those of us who have experienced acceptance among our peers, or, God forbid, have been among the spiteful bullies, should read Please Stop Laughing at Me so we can understand the pain of the victims. The examples of ¬cruel verbal rejection, avoidance and even physical attacks, will make you cringe. The repeated abuse, regardless of the numerous schools she attended, reveals its shocking prevalence. Blanco writes vividly and clearly, making it a good read. Any parent whose child is experiencing intentional rejection, would benefit greatly by reading this work. So would teachers, and any others who work with children.

A must-read for just about everyone - you bullies, as well as you "victims" - no you don't have to be a victim.

Jodee is an inspiration. She is able to present, in simple English, all of the confused thoughts and emotions of a recipient of bullying. She survived bullying on a mega scale. I cannot wait to read the sequel.

Two groups of people should be reading this book. The first group is people that work with children and teens. The second group is teenagers.
If you've ever been an outcast, you can totally relate to this young woman's story. If you've been on the "fringes" of popularity, trying desperately to fit in, you'll recognize some of the people in this book.
The book is an easy, yet painful read. It isn't really a deep book; it doesn't analyze or find any solutions, which bothered me at first. But then I realized, Jodee isn't trying to find a solution to bullying, she's just making us more aware of what happens. She's educating us, through this story, and that could lead to solutions.
I feel Jodee is very brave, for putting this story in print. I'd like to see a follow-up to her story, a "what happened after it was published" sort of book.

Please Stop Laughing at Me by Jodee Blanco

It's so horribly sad when I hear the news of a child who commits suicide because they've been endlessly teased by classmates at school. Something has to be done. With new forms of communication, like facebook and texting, it's much easier for kids to torture their peers. Even more devastating is when the parents get involved in the teasing too. It's unbelievable to me how some adults condone and even encourage this kind of behavior. I'm especially appalled by some of the reviews people have written on this book. I would think after reading a book on bullying, people would refrain from calling the author names and saying that they hate her. I guess some people never grow up. My only issue with the book is that I wish there had been more advise for kids, parents and teachers who are dealing with this type of situation. She did recommend not trying to rise above the abuse by ignoring the bullies, but to stand up to them and to tell a responsible adult. I applaud Jodee for having the courage to tell her story. I'm sure it wasn't easy to relive those embarrassing details. Please note, this is an account of the bullying Jodee experienced as a child. It offers a few suggestions on overcoming bullying, but it's mostly a story of the author's personal experience.
