I am not a big manga fan - I am very picky about what I like because I want it to be jammed with content, as opposed to many shounen/robot/fighting manga where the action takes up an entire panel or two, reducing a thick volume down to a 15 minute romp. Not so with Aqua.
First off, "Aqua" is noticeably well-drawn. Clean lines, lots of attention to detail, interesting and lush architecture and landscapes, well-proportioned characters with dynamic expressions (and hair!), no over-use of zip tones, and chibi used to good silly effect.
The next thing that hits you is the pacing. Though we can say "Aqua" and "Aria" are about Akari and her friends learning to become full-fledged undines (gondoliers), most of the stories are not really about this - they just show us glimpses into every day things that can become treasures in our hearts and memories. Beautiful scenery, a coincidental meeting, the change in seasons.
This volume starts off with Akari's arrival to Aqua, formerly known as Mars. The city of Venesia was built to resemble Venice of earth so people go about their daily lives in a more rustic fashion despite the technology flying around in the skies overhead. This interesting mix of rustic and futurism is balanced in a unique and refreshing way, helping to add to the magical feel of the story as we follow Akari in her discovery of her new home. It is that discovery that makes this volume so good -- I especially like the chapter in which Akari and Aika travel to an abandoned part of the city that was built before the water was released on the surface of the planet. We see scenes of submerged streets, staircases, boats, and buildings that are simply delicious to see. I think Erica Friedman of Okazu said it best when she described Aria (and Aqua) as full of "scenery pr0n" because I haven't read another manga with scenery that had as much attention paid to it - especially in the last chapter, which is so far my favorite chapter of both "Aqua" and "Aria" in terms of the journey and scenery.
The laid-back, slice of life pace makes this a great lazy Sunday read, perfect for any occasion, especially when you need to feel calm and warm and fuzzy inside.

AQUA - ARIA - aber TokyoPop schlampt herum...

An epic work wasted by Tokyo Pop Publisher...

Aqua is a 2 volume prequel to Aria, a most amazing manga created by Kozue Amano.
The flow, progress, and contents of the stories are very soothing and relaxing...
it is like taking new vacations just from reading each different chapter.
The world through Kozue's eyes is just so dazzling that it really rub off on the readers.
The reason I gave the low score is due to Tokyo Pop's poor take on producing it with such cheap quality material.
I own 2 other version of Aqua. Original Japanese which contains a colored insert and better quality paper, as well as the Taiwanese version which has no colored insert but same great quality.
The 3rd version which was published by Tokyo Pop has neither. The cover page creases right away, and there are smeared ink
from the prints as well as randomly folded pages which are then printed over... Its such a disappointment which compelled
me to buy the other versions, the story is just too beautiful to pass up.
Story I would give 5 out of 5. Tokyo Pop's publication of this product 1 out of 5.

Simple Pleasures on a Magical Planet
This is a fascinating manga series that combines sci-fi, fantasy, and slice of life. The series takes place in the future, when Mars has been terraformed and renamed Aqua (because of all the water on its surface). The human colonies on Aqua are designed to resemble cities on Earth (called Manhome here). The people of Aqua prefer a much slower pace of life than people on Manhome, and aspects of life on Aqua more closely resemble Earth's past. A young girl, Akari, comes to Aqua to learn to become a gondolier in the city of Neo Venezia (which resembles Venice). Female gondoliers, called Undines, give tours of the city, giving Akari plenty of time to admire the beauty of her new home and meet interesting people. The two Aqua books are the prequel to the main series, Aria. Aqua covers Akari's arrival on the planet and introduction to life on Aqua. The series has received some criticism for being slow and lacking danger and adventure, but that is not really the point of the series. The main purpose is to show people how to appreciate the small pleasures of life. The sci-fi and fantasy elements (the spaceships, advanced environmental controls, intelligent Martian cats, and even the occasional appearances of the legendary Cait Sith) are mainly background to the stories about the magic of friendship and simple pleasures. Each volume contains a few short stories about Akari and her friends and the little adventures they have on a daily basis and the life lessons they learn. It's a great series for relaxing when you're stressed out.
The stories included in this first volume are:
The Water Planet -- Akari arrives on Aqua and meets the only two employees of the gondola company she will work for: her mentor, Alicia, and the company's president, a Martian cat named Aria. (All gondola companies have a Martian cat as their mascot/president.)
The Guide on the Water -- Akari meets Aika, who is a trainee at Himeya, another gondola company. Akari is embarrassed to learn that when she practiced rowing on Manhome, she was doing it backwards, but is reassured that under Alicia's guidance, she will do better.
The City Submerged -- Much of the city is flooded during high tide, making it unsafe to go out in gondolas, but when President Aria needs more of his favorite food, Akari decides to venture into the city on foot.
The Kingdom of Cats -- President Aria sometimes ventures off alone, and Akari and Aika follow him to see if there's any truth to Alicia's story about a mythical kingdom of cats ruled by the king of the cats, Cait Sith. However, the trip is stranger than they bargained for.
The Hill of Hope -- Aika is promoted to single (the next step up in gondola training, as shown by the gloves that the girls wear) but refuses to tell Akari what the promotion test is like. Then, Alicia decides to take Akari on a special picnic.
