To understand this book, one should read Catcher in the Rye again before reading the book. I found the book rather dry and a bit contrived like the author was trying to hard to emulate the writing style of J.D. Salinger. I was hoping the author would have described Holden's life as an adult and what happened to him. Still a lot of unanswered questions left after the book was finished.

This is a 'sequel' to the world famous "Catcher in the Rye" by J D Salinger (1945)
Written by a different author (2009) who is writing about Salinger's character Holden Caulfield sixty years later when he is an old man. Approached it with some trepidation as the original is such an iconic book - but was surprised and found it most interesting and absorbing.

One of the most disappointing books ever

I just feel sympathy for J.D.Salinger. His prose is original, inventive, intellectual and compelling. However, David California's prose is banal, and this book, which is supposed to be about Holden Caulfield "60 years on" could be about just any 76-year old man, roaming around New York somewhat pointlessly. It bears just about no relation to the original (which so many thousands of readers have loved). How some reviewers could give it 5 stars is totally baffling . . . don't waste your time! Read "Seymour, an Introduction" instead, and give yourself a treat.

My God this book is depressing

Not quite sure what the point of this book is. I'm not convinced that it is particularly well written although it does contain some fairly convincing insights into just how un appealing being at the end of one,s life could be. If you're a big Catcher in the Rye Fan read it. Otherwise give it a miss.
