Stunning Images
2017年11月16日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
One of the most interesting collections of photos I have ever seen, and amazing that Pete Turner produced them in the color darkroom before digital and Photoshop. I have done darkroom work, mostly with black and white and the chemistry is daunting. Even more daunting though is the color darkroom chemistry which has to be kept at a constant 90 degree + . How he produced all these marvelous photos is a big mystery. The man is a creative genius with his colors, to say nothing about the originality of his actual images. He used his chemistry to create these bold composition, great ART in my opinion.

Pete Turner was a pioneer
2013年4月14日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
Recently I discovered the work of Pete Turner. I am really attracted to the vibrant colors in his images. He became a fine art color photographer in the 1960s when the trend was for black-and-white photos. He embraced digital technology as it evolved in the photography world. I find his work amazing. I recommend this book without reservation.

Slick color photography from the mid to late 20th Century

This is photography from a different era altogether. Pete Turner's work was associated with advertising in the 1960s through the 1980s and I well remember his photos in Nikon advertisements of the day. Some of his photos also appeared on the covers of jazz LPs. Other photographers did similar work at the time. Art Kane, Eric Meola and Jay Maisel come readily to mind as examples. It was impressive yet commercial photography.
Turner used a slide copy apparatus as one of his main creative tools, masking, filtering and copying his original Kodachrome slides to manipulate, add contrast and super saturate the colors. It was an unusual yet effective technique. Turner mentions this method in the book.
The photos today seem a little on the tame side when compared to the highly manipulated and saturated digital images we are accustomed to seeing. Also, there has been a significant shift in the aesthetics of color art photography post William Eggleston, Stephen Shore and others. I admit Pete Turner's photos no longer have the attraction they once had for me. In many ways, these pictures are nostalgia. But they are really good anyway when judged within their time period. I felt lucky to find a new, unread copy still in shrink wrap here on Amazon especially when you consider the publication date was in the 1980s.
