When they get to listing the pantheon of folk music gods, Bert Jansch's name will be near the top of the roll call. For more than 30 years, he's shown just how good he can be, working solo or, for a long time, with Pentangle. On his first album in five years, he manages to add handily to the legend. His blues are deep indigo, and his instrumental work understated in its brilliance. He doesn't need to be flashy; he's got nothing to prove to anybody. It may have taken quite a while, but this is the sound of a man who's finally found peace with himself. If that comes off as more psychotherapy than music, don't be worried, it doesn't sound that way. Hard Rockに疲れた男は、これを聞くのだ

ハートブレイクとこれしかもってないが、前者よりも
ロックぽいと思う。年のせいかメロウさが抜けて、より
sharpになっているように思う。短めの曲が１4曲も入って
いてvolumeもたっぷり（total　50分）国内盤にはBonus track
が入っていてこれが秀逸。Another Star これをきいて救われた気がしている。
中古盤をみかけたら、是非買いなさいよ。

Although he's passed on, Bert Jansch's legacy lives through his vast catalogue of recorded music. This is certainly one of the best, if not the essential one to own. If you've never heard of him, he is a master on the acoustic guitar, inspiring Jimmy Page and Neil Young. He tells compelling stories through this set of original songs. Bottleneck slide, or saxophone, bass guitar, drums, backing vocals, and strings enhance some of the songs. Back Home is one example. More often it's guitar and vocal. His baritone voice is not for everyone. Have a listen.

I've been following Jansch since I discovered Pentangle the year they broke up in the early '70s, but I never knew about this release until last year (2011). It was a limited release originally and apparently not well promoted. However, this ranks with the best of his works. You can tell Bert poured his whole heart into the compositions. The songs are highly inventive, yet relaxed and natural. They are some of the richest of his career. While it has a cool slow-strolling jazz sound, you actually feel the humidity in the Summer Heat. Walk Quietly By is a sweet observation of an old man's life, with Bert's classic hint of nostalgia that never becomes cloying. No One Around has a classy blues swing. Born With The Blues goes back to Bert's spare, pure vocal/guitar blues days and would fit very well (along with Open Road) on one of his early albums. Morning Brings Peace of Mind could easily be an early work, having a melodic resemblance to Sally Free and Easy. The title song and Stealing the Night Away stand out with a drive unlike his other songs. The weak point is the throwaway, Honey, Don't You Understand. It is too cloying with its simplistic melody - fine if it were a children's song, but not here. It is much too out-of-step on a disc that includes such passionate soul-searchers like Living In The Shadows and Step Back.

Bert Jansch has one of the sleepiest, slurriest, most melancholy voices in all music. He could sing Bring Me Sunshine and find the shadows in it, or a hymn of praise and still sound more like Doubting Thomas. He makes Randy Newman or Nick Drake sound like bushy-tailed optimists.
I love Bert Jansch's voice.
I can't claim to have heard all BJ's albums, though I know most of them, but to my mind this is, excepting one or two of his very early efforts, his best work. Each and every song registers, stays with you after only one or two hearings, and sounds like an old friend from then on. I've always had the feeling, since I bought it in 1995 on its release, that BJ put his whole heart into this collection of songs.
I can't pick favourite tracks, they're all great songs. Bert has always allowed the music, and that laconic, after-hours voice, to do the talking, which they do here with style, wit and a stream of melody almost embarrassing in its richness.
Oh, and boy can he play the guitar!
If you're looking for an unassuming, wholly likeable, musically inventive, lyrically strong set of delightful folk-tinged songs - let me assure you, the circus has very definitely come to town.
I've been playing this at around the same time as Paul McCartney's glorious album, also from the mid-70s, Flaming Pie. They have more in common than you might think. Two guys obviously mightily inspired, giving their all melodically, lyrically, and vocally.
And Neil Young loves him too. What are you waiting for?
