Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's 1950s recordings fuse the energy of big-band horns, the shuffles and boogies of R&B, and his own white-hot guitar leads. Greatly influenced by fellow Texans Blind Lemon Jefferson and T-Bone Walker, Brown absorbed their smooth, melodic, single-string solo technique, but added a rough-edged intensity to his explosive style. The slow blues "Dirty Work at the Crossroads" added Jimmy McCracklin's rolling piano to Brown's bold and brash guitar work, but it was the 1954 instrumental "Okie Dokie Stomp" that put Brown on the map. With blaring horns urging him on, Brown attacks the music with ferocity. "Ain't That Dandy" is another instrumental guitar romp, while 1959's "Just Before Dawn" features Brown's swinging violin. --Marc Greilsamer

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's "The Original Peacock Recordings," which consists of songs that were recorded in the 50's, is a primer in "Texas Blues," characterized by stinging electric guitar licks, rollicking piano rolls, and jumping horns. There truly is a classic, almost timeless, quality to the twelve songs compiled on this CD, all of which are very good. I highly, highly recommend "The Original Peacock Recordings" to anyone who is interested in hearing roots music that lies at the heart of the Americana sound in the genres of blues, rock, and R&B. Be advised, however, that there is a much more homogenous sound to the songs on this CD than on many of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's other recordings, which often include jazz, Cajun, country, and bluegrass elements as well as rock, blues, and R&B elements. That is not a reason not to get this CD, but rather a reason to get some of his other recordings as well, especially "Texas Swing," which is a compilation CD that contains the majority of the songs from two of his releases from the early 1980's, "Alright Again" and "One More Mile," "Long Way Home," which includes a superstar lineup of guest artists, "The Man," and "Flippin Out."

These 1952-1959 recordings are mostly about the slow aching blues and a couple of songs seem to end clumsily because, gosh darn it, a song "just can't go over 3 minutes long", in the 1950's. Other than that this is a fine collection, better than a novelty with a song or two worthy of a Fats Domino-type hit. And it is cool to hear Clarence Gatemouth Brown playing some early harmonica on "Gate's Salty Blues". If a fan of Gatemouth already you will want to checkout an early violin demonstration on a fine little upbeat, mellow-ish tune titled "Just Before Dawn".
The ORIGINAL PEACOCK RECORDINGS is a good historical document that will probably have some people wondering why Gate had not remained more hardcore to the blues and less of a big band, jump-jazz dude. Gate's fans will appreciate the ...Peacock Recordings as a necessary stepping stone for an artist whose early brilliance is on display, here, a solid representation at the heart of American music.
