Like the best guitar heroes, Ben Folds, pianist and leader of a guitarless trio called the Ben Folds Five, commands and fuels his small, tightly wound ensemble with an authoritative, nearly virtuosic style. Folds, based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, borrows from everywhere but lends new inspiration and insight to the instrument's possibilities--he's the Jimi Hendrix of the baby grand. His frenetic key-pounding eclipses old-time styles from honky-tonk to Jerry Lee Lewis rag, and he outplinks megastars such as Elton John and Billy Joel while sifting them both through the mondo hammerings of classic pop-loving alternative keyboard bashers like Todd Rundgren and Jools Holland. To complement Folds-the-pianist's clean and bright ivory tinkerings, Folds-the-singer's clear and dynamic tenor swirls through Folds-the-songwriter's very capably crafted, sugary pop gems. "Philosophy" starts with a rolling Joel-like intro, slips into a Rundgrenish verse and chorus--complete with the perfect Beatlesque harmonies of bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee--and then breaks out in an overdriven piano quote from Gershwin in the climactic solo. "Underground" Sgt. Peppers us with faux theatrics and then plunges into a soul-gospel groove about the joys of the alternative rock scene. "Uncle Walter" is a character sketch Ray Davies wishes he wrote but couldn't; "Boxing" is an imagined confab between Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell that Tom Waits wishes he wrote but wouldn't. The rest of Ben Folds Five's debut achievement just does what any other timeless summer record should: it makes you feel sunny enough inside to last all through the year. --Roni Sarig

Ben Folds Five は暗めで美しいアルバムもありますが、このアルバムは明るくノリの良いビートものが多いです。
Ben Folds Five といえばなんといってもピアノ。
ロック、ジャズ、プルース、クラシック、いろんな所で活躍するピアノというものをたんのうできます。

ほろ苦い記憶の残る高校生時代に出会った曲です。
30代になり、仕事に打ち込んでふと深夜に思い出して、
購入しました。
澄み切ったピアノのイントロで高校時代の懐かしい通学路、
そのときに描いていた将来像を思い出します。
誰にでもあるようなそんな記憶を呼び覚ましてくれるような
すばらしいアルバムだと思います。

　1995年、BEN FOLDS FIVEの1stアルバムです。

　BEN FOLDS FIVEは、アメリカ出身のロック・バンドで、メンバーは、
Ben Folds (Vo, Piano), Robert Sledge (B), Darren Jessee (Dr)。。。の3人です。
ギターレスのピアノロック・バンドです。（5人ではありません・笑）
　
　楽曲は、Billy Joelのようなメロディ、QUEENのようなポップ感、
THE BEATLESのようなコーラス、Todd Rundgrenのような変っぽさ（？）、
グランジのような脱力感や倒錯感、Jazz系のオシャレなピアノ etcが、
勢いよく流れていく、ピアノ・ロックです。

　力強いピアノで始まる"Jackson Cannery"、ロマンチックな旋律が爽快な"Philosophy"、
ほのぼの & おセンチな"Alice Childress"、QUEENを思わせるような"Underground"、
小気味よいテンポ & ちょっぴり哀愁な"Sports & Wine"
。。。などなど、「いい曲いっぱい！」、「聴き終えると、もう終わり？」って感じです。

　PopでRock？、新鮮で懐かしい？、はねるような哀愁感？。。。不思議な音楽です。

　当時は、NIRVANA, PEARL JAM etcのグランジ・ロックがブームで、
どのアーティストも、歪んだギターがガンガン・グオングオン言ってて、歌詞もシリアスで。。。という状況でした。
　そんな中、軽快にピアノを鳴らすBEN FOLDS FIVEの登場は、とても新鮮でした。

　「BEN FOLDS FIVEファン」「BEN FOLDS FIVE初心者」ともに、オススメです。
　「ピアノロック・ファン」にもいいのですが、
Pop感が面白いので、「Todd Rundgren, Paul Gilbert, JELLYFISH etcのファン」にも、Good！なのでは？と思います。
　「懐かしい人」「普段、Heavyな音楽、歪んだ音楽を聴いている人」にも、一度試してもらいたいです。
（中古盤・激安です。。。が、決して「使い捨て音楽」ではありません）

フックのきいたポップな曲が、当時のグランジ全盛期に新鮮でした。
楽しい気分になります！

彼等のアルバムで持っていたのは「金返せ」が収録されている2枚目、それを思い出して今ごろDAPに取り込んだらどっぷりヘビロテ。このデビュー盤も購入するに至る。ジワジワとくるのだ、このピアノ。歌っている姿が浮かび上がるライブ感。ベンの歌声も味があるねー。曲の後半ラプソディ・イン・ブルーで一気に駆け上がる「フィロソフィー」は、詞も相まって休みの日の仕事が捗る。ちなみに2枚目では「ケイト」が好きです。

９５年発表の１ｓｔ。ベン・フォールズ (vo、p)、ロバート・スレッジ(b)、ダーレン・ジェシー(dr) というギター・レス、ピアノ・トリオのデビュー・アルバム。この時代はグランジなるつまらない音楽が猛威を振るっており、次世代のグループはもとより、前世代のグループまでがギターのノイズで曲の悪さをごまかしたかのような音楽を生み出していた。ベン・フォールズ・ファイヴはトリオ編成を活かしたシンプル・イズ・ベスト、そして楽曲重視という本来なら主流を行くべき音楽性を打ち出しており、特にこの時代のギターのノイズにうんざりしていた音楽ファンの救世主のような存在にもなっていたと思う。彼らのスタイルは古くはエルトン・ジョンなどたくさんのアーティストがやってきたことではあるが、この時代においては特に新鮮だった。強力なタッチのピアノに爆音ベース、音数こそは多いものの熱くならずに土台をしっかりと支えるドラムスにフレッシュな歌声を伴った瑞々しい楽曲群は今聞いたとしても強いインパクトと感動を与えてくれるはずである。ギター・レスというのが信じられないほど硬質なサウンドを生み出しており、トリオ故の型にはまらない奇想天外で自由な演奏は前のめりに疾走していくような感覚すら感じさせる。このスピード感はザックリとした音像によるものも大きいのかもしれないが、ポジティヴで若さ溢れる彼らの資質をそのまま真空パックしたものなのだろう。ジャズ的な要素も随所に感じられるが、それを全面に出さないセンスの良さも特筆もの。本作は暑苦しいバラードが含まれていないのも良い。９０年代を象徴する小細工、人工添加物なしのまさに本命の名盤の一つである。

Of course the album is a stone cold 90's classic but i felt i needed to mention the vinyl pressing from Plain Recordings as it has been getting a lot of negative reviews on this page, reading them made me hold off and contemplate if i wanted to put the money down for an inferior pressing.
So after i finally snapped and it landed on my record player i'm really regretting not buying this sooner!
The RECORD SOUNDS GREAT, not the greatest i own by far but it's free of defects and sounds a lot richer and wider than the CD i've been listening to since 1997. I know a bad vinyl when i hear one and no alarm bells were raised when i first spun this baby from start to finish.
The other reviewers may be a a lot more stringent in their vinyl tolerance or have super high-end equipment but for my humble turn table and as a casual yet enthusiastic record collector, this pressing sounds completely listenable and is a faithful reproduction of this impressive debut.
In short, Plain Recordings have gotten a lot of flack for this and other pressings (i also own Mr Bungle pressings from them which sound great), but in this case it's wholly unwarranted. Buy it before it's gone!

I would tend to disagree with the other reviewer, it's certainly not the worst vinyl I've ever heard. I own a lot of audiophile vinyl (ORG, MoFi, Music On Vinyl) and a lot of standard vinyl. While this release doesn't represent a significant upgrade in sound from the CD, it is still an upgrade. My guess is that being an independent first release, the production quality was a bit limited to begin with, and there's only so much you can eke out of it. That being said, with my Audio Technica AT440MLA Dual-Moving Magnet Phono Cartridge cart, compared to the CD the soundstage is a bit more open, the highs are a bit more crisp, the vocals are a bit smoother, and sibilance is pretty well under control. I have plenty of records where I can't tell the difference between the CD and the vinyl at all unless I hear a pop or click (Head Automatica Decadence and Saves The Day Stay What You Are [Vinyl ] reissues come to mind), but in this case, the difference between the vinyl and the CD is always clear in blind testing. My biggest knock is the huge amount of surface noise for a 180g record. Other than that, this is a worthwhile purchase if you are a fan, especially at the huge discount prices you can currently get it for. This is my first Plain Recordings record, and after this I'd be willing to give them a chance on their many many other 90's recordings... for the right price.

EDIT:
After listening again, I noticed pitch warble at the end of Side B. After examination, I can see Side B is printed slightly off center, so buyer beware.
