The Dave Clark Five have long been given short shrift by history, consigned to the "Merseybeat" category. But hits like "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces," and the gorgeous "Because" still stand out as classy pop records. On the other hand, the DC5's cover of the Contours' "Do You Love Me" stands out as one of the more unbridled, edgy English singles of the sixties. The band actually had a winning way with both more rocking material and softer, poppier sides. While this two-disc anthology is probably a little much for most, the serious pop collector will find a great deal here to celebrate. --Skip Heller

彼らの事が大好きなのに、彼らとシンクロできなかった私<=遅れてきた世代達>……もう、完全にオジサンですが。彼らのヒット曲等は、“ラジオのOn The Air”
では遥か昔から何とかカセットテープでエア・チェック(←完全死語？)をして何回も有り難い事に聴けました。しかし、例のリイシュー問題ですな。Black Disk時代とCompact Disk時代それぞれ1度のベスト盤のみ(？だった筈。)…
…。

彼らの楽曲がこういう形でも簡単に入手できるようになり、とても嬉しいです！。今現在でも冷静に考えても素晴らしいグループで
、その楽曲/カバー曲も傑作目白押し！(←死語！？)。私の大好きなR&Bカバーの選曲センスの良さもパフォーマンスも全て良しと言って良い！。

どうしてこのベスト盤CD買うのかって？！！。

　イギリスに憧れていた。ミステリも映画も、イギリスものが好きだった。
ミステリなら、うんと渋いところで、ニコラス・ブレイクとか、エドマンド・クリスピンなど、よかった。
映画だって、バルコンタッチのドキュメンタリーなところが好きだ。
シドニー・ギリアットやアレキサンダー・マッケンドリックの『マダムと泥棒』なども、好きだった。
考えてみれば、ヒッチコック先生はイギリス人だし、ディクスン・カーは大のイギリス贔屓だった。
サッカーはヤッパ、マンチェスター・ユナイテッドだった。ジョージ・ベストもカッコよかったけれど、『金髪の小悪魔』のデニス・ローに憧れていた。
音楽だったら、そりゃビートルズもストーンズもサイコーだが、デイヴ・クラーク・ファイヴが好きだった。
『ビコーズ』ですよね。ヤッパ、イギリスは凄い。

　ただね～、気難しく、小うるさいのが困る。
別にこうもりはいつも持ってるし、雨降っても、傘差さなくたって平気だ。
バーバリーのトレンチコートを着て、雨に濡れるのも乙なものだ。
片面トーストはむしろウェルカムだし、多少、晩飯が美味くなくてもかまわん。
鱈のフライ（フィッシュアンドチップス）は好物だし、飽きない味だ。
スコッチ・ウィスキーはおいしいし、日曜になれば、庭でバラの手入れなど、率先垂範でやるさ。
冬になって映画『ホリディ』のように雪がふれば、暖炉の灯りでアガサ・クリスティを読もう。
コーヒーなど飲まなくても、レモンティーがあれば文句はない。

　あ、ミルクティがあった～～～。
ジョージ・オーウェルに『一杯のおいしい紅茶』というエッセイがある。
一に、紅茶はインド産かセイロン（スリランカ）産であるべし。
二に、紅茶はミルクで飲むべし。
三に、紅茶に砂糖は入れてはならぬ。

　上は、オーウェルの紅茶愛飲の三原則だ、一と三なら、さもありなんですむ。
一は、日東紅茶より、リプトン紅茶がおいしいと思った。サー・トーマス・リプトンはエライ。
まぁ、めったに飲めないティパックだった。
三も、紅茶は渋めのものであるから、砂糖を入れるな。。。なんだか、納得だなあ。
日本茶にも砂糖など、入れない。
問題は二番だ。冷たいミルクの午後の紅茶じゃないと、ダメだそうだ。
なぜだ。。。。レモンが紅茶の高貴な香りを消したり、うつくしい水色を消すのだそうだ。
だったら、ストレートでいいじゃん。
キューカンバーサンドイッチは大好きだ。きゅうりは畑でもいで丸かじり世代だ。
スコーンとかも、パンケーキでしょ。違うか？。パンケーキのようなものでしょ。だったら好物だ。
がしかし、どうしても、ミルクティでないと、ダメみたいだ。
ボクはミルクが嫌いだ。どうしても、飲むことができない。

　三十歳になるかならないかの頃、ロンドン駐在を打診されたことがあった。だが、それは志願しても行けなかったかもしれない。
その十年後に、軽井沢のスイスの山小屋のようなホテルに泊まった。赤い郵便ポストがホテルの脇にあった。
ジョン・レノンゆかりのティールームのメニューに、ロイヤル・ミルクティがあった。
けれど頼まなかった。飲めないと思ったからだ。どうしようもなく、さみしかった。
樹間越しに別荘が見え隠れする通りを散歩してたら、カラマツ林からたくさんの黄色い落ち葉が降った。
ああ、ボクはイギリスに行くことはないのだなぁ、とそのときに思った。

　” Because”のイントロのオルガンを聴くたび、イギリスを断念した時の悲しみが蘇ってくる。
けれど、本当に名曲だと、今もそう思う。

一時、アメリカではあのビートルズより人気があったかもしれないＤＣ５のヒット曲をほぼ網羅した２枚組ＣＤです。ルックスからもストーンズみたいな爬虫類顔やアニマルズみたいな野獣顔でなくかっこいい男前が揃ってました。彼らの基本路線ははアメリカのＲ＆Ｂとロックンロールのアップテンポ物が得意だった。ただ大ヒットはスローな「ビコーズ」と皮肉なことになってます。本命は「ドゥ・ユ・ーラブ・ミー」「ビッツ＆ピーセス」「かっこいい２人」「グラッド・オール・オーバー」等々ずらっとヒット曲が並んでいます。ぜひ聞いてみていただきたいと思います。

以前もともと持っていたのですが、ＣＤに傷をつけてしまい再生不可能になってしまいました。再度手に入れようと探しまくったのですが廃番になっていてあきらめていたところ、アマゾンで手に入りました。お金には代えられない嬉しさでした。本当に感謝しています。

二枚組みに目一杯に詰め込まれたDC5の歴史、１枚ものの｢グラッド･オール･オーヴァー｣(日本発売)よりもこちらの方が量的にも充実しているし、彼等のヒット曲でも｢ビューティフル･ベイビー｣以降のものはけっこう歯抜けがあるけれど６４〜６６年辺りの充実した期間のヒットは網羅されているように思う。日本のファンにとってはEMIでの初ヒット｢マルベリー･ブッシュ｣も入れておいて欲しかったかもしれないが、まずは合格の企画だと思える。

とにかく６０年代中庸のブリティッシュ･ロック･シーンを語るには欠かせない素材が詰まっている。ビートルズ、ストーンズだけが火付け役ではなかった事を証明する記録だと考えるべきものである。オリジナルアルバムよりもまずはベストもの、興味のある人ならこちらを手に入れることがお勧め。ツアー専用機と一緒に写る写真のCDレーベルの写真もかっこ良い。

後は映像ものをもっと充実させて欲しいというのはファンの望みだが、デイヴはその事をどう考えているのだろうか?

興味があって購入したところ、以前発売されたアメリカ盤２枚組のもので、最悪なことにディスク２もディスク１と同じ曲目内容でした。
ジャケットもコピーしたもので画像は最悪です。ジャケットにはmade in the uk 2006 cellar dweller records　が表記されてました。
全くの劣悪、不良品です。商品は、商品画像のないものに充分注意して購入しないと痛い目にあいます。これでは、アマゾンさんの
信用がなくなります。

The Dave Clark Five were the third British act to reach the U.S. during the British Invasion after The Beatles and Dusty Springfield. Glad All Over first hit the charts on February 15, 1964 but one must make allowances that the national charts were always two weeks or more behind due to the slow technology involved in compiling airplay and sales figures. For most of '64 they were considered rivals of the Beatles and perhaps the group that would supplant the Beatles as the top British act. Though this sounds unlikely today, this was the time when new British artists began appearing every other week and despite the sound and the fury of Beatlemania, the Beatles were not necessarily considered totally secure on their perch. Perhaps they were just the first to arrive.

In 1964 alone the DC5 had seven Top 20 hits, of which four were Top 10's. Magazines played up the rivalry between the two groups with some entire issues being devoted to "The Dave Clark Five vs The Beatles" (with lots of pictures, of course). The British Invasion was at first viewed, especially by the adult press, as a young girl craze, just a new kind of teen idol thing. But as it developed it proved to be multi-faceted and deeper than that. Both the Beatles and Dave Clark Five nevertheless, were made for the teen magazines with a favorite for every girl. The DC5 in particular were a good-looking bunch of guys who in their trademark blazers looked like they could easily be part of a British Olympic Team. Their label (Columbia's Epic in the U.S.) played this up, presenting them as a cleaner cut band than the Beatles. This worked against them in time as the Sixties would turn out to be more inclined toward the scruffy, but that was yet to come. The Rolling Stones hadn't arrived yet and they made everyone else look like choirboys.

The Dave Clark Five had the hardest rock sound anyone had heard to this date.They were even louder and harder than the Beatles singing Twist and Shout or Please Please Me. There was nothing to rival them. This harder music of the Beatles and Dave Clark Five created an interest in the British Invasion by boys who had not been totally enthusiastic about the American Bandstand scene of the early 60's (though I liked both). The band's sound was based on older rock 'n' roll bands with organ, sax and drums at the center of things and lead and bass guitars mostly providing rhythm and a little extra depth. They were not part of the eventually triumphing sound of big lead guitar supported by everything else and replacing the saxophone as the "hot" instrument, as would be developed by the Kinks, Yardbirds and others. The instruments were played together without solos by sax, organ or even drums (after all, Dave Clark was the drummer). Everything was amplified, usually with a lot of echo with Mike Smith's lead singing backed up by the others. Mike's electric organ and Denis Payton's sax provided the necessary base of the music beyond the drumming. Lenny Davidson's lead guitar and Rick Huxley's bass filled in what was left.

The group was one of the few British Invasion acts that were even bigger in the U.S. than in Britain. They eventually placed 20 songs on the American charts and 15 of those were Top 20. The early and mid-60's were a singles scene and charting really mattered. Albums were secondary and usually full of covers and filler. The DC5's British albums were good overall because they only had four of them. In the U.S. Columbia made them put out 13 albums, which means none of them are masterpieces. After four hard rocking hits, Dave had to force Epic to put out the mellow ballad "Because" in the summer of '64 with the president of Epic telling him it would be the end of the group. Instead, it showed that the band was able to do more than one thing (something the Beatles had already been doing) and became their biggest hit to date.

Dave Clark had an amazing business mind, a rare thing for pop performers of the day. Most of them made hardly anything, being ripped off by record executives, producers, managers and contracts that gave them fractions of a penny on sales of records. Not with this band. Dave Clark was himself the band's manager and producer. He did not have the band sign a contract that tied them to a label that dictated the terms. Instead, he licensed the songs to various labels (EMI in Britain, Epic in the U.S.) and then, remarkably, he owned the rights to the material after the license was up. This kind of set up was totally unheard of until the very late 60's and early 70's. he didn't want to form his own record company and get stuck with manufacturing, distribution or promotion. It has to be noted that he wrote almost all the songs himself or with a member of the band. Even more importantly, when the British Invasion hit it was like a super-nova; it was suddenly THE thing and labels would do anything to get a hit British act.

This collection is absolutely top of the line, both its strength and a bit of a problem. Every DC5 U.S. single is here except You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, a minor follow-up to their final U.S. hit, You Got What It Takes, unusual for its Memphis-sounding horn section. The singles are arranged in a roughly but not completely chronological order. There are also lots of their better album tracks and interesting B-sides. There are several songs from their movie, Catch Us If You Can in the U.K. re-titled Having a Wild Weekend in the U.S. (Why?). It ends with a surprise version of Everybody Get Together Get Together by the Youngbloods). All in all on the two discs there are 50 songs. The sound is exceptional, with the disc being arranged by Dave Clark himself. There is a highly informative 31 page booklet full of information and photos and thorough documentation for every song. It's all a big fan could wish for.

So what's the problem? This disc didn't come out until 1993. That's a long time after their heyday and long after CD's were introduced. In his defense, Dave Clark was busy in the 80's producing Time-the Musical, a huge West End hit starring Sir Lawrence Olivier that also produced a big hit album. Still a CD was needed and what happened was that lots of pirates of dubious quality flooded the market. Dave also did not license any DC5 songs for collections. Though the Beatles and the Stones do this, in the end he DC5 were not as big as they were and should have realized that by withholding all songs, the memory of his group and its existence in the British Invasion was being erased. Their career didn't span decades like the Stones and individual Beatles and potential new fans will have never heard of them. Alan Klein has made the same mistake withholding Herman's Hermits and early Animals hits from collections. It's also true that oldies music doesn't generally get more valuable and in fact, the original audience is getting older.

The second problem is the deluxe nature of the set. I understand that Dave Clark would only want his career represented in the finest way. But by doing so he makes the resulting CD set unaffordable for many of his fans. Back in the 60's and 70's a label usually put out a single Greatest Hits record and that was that. But once CD's came in it became standard label practice to put out a deluxe 2-CD set of a major artist and then a really good one-disc version at full price, a mid-priced hits collection and a budget disc with about ten songs and no booklet at all. With the same label doing everything, the sound quality is usually the same and it's just the number of songs that makes the difference. At least three versions of the DC5 hits would be nice.

"History" was the only licensed Dave Clark Five hits collection. It is produced by Hollywood Records which is owned by Disney. It went out of print once and was selling for $60 to over $100. it finally came back into print due to demand. There is a licensed "Dave Clark Five-the Hits in 2008 but that is in the U.K. only. That's it for authentic, official Dave Clark Five CD's. Though he's done himself a disfavor at least it's an absolutely wonderful collection with incredible sound. If you're even thinking about it, get it soon before it goes out of print again.

Three of the members of the group have passed away: Mike Smith in 2008, Denis Payton also in 2008, and Rick Huxley in 2013.

This is the definitive collection, with no significant song missing, unlike the infamous release many years ago by Dave Clark, with the white cover and large black lettering, that had my favorite song, 'Small Talk' conspicuously missing. Finally I have "Small Talk' without the first note missing, as was the case with yet another CD, a bootleg "Greatest Hits" CD I bought years ago. "Small Talk' and 'You Got What It Takes' are worth the total price, in my humble opinion. Imagine getting 'Glad All Over', 'Bits And Pieces', 'Do You Love Me', 'Because', 'Catch Us If You Can', 'I Like It Like That', 'Over And Over' and so many others for FREE!

I certainly don't claim to be a expert on DC5 and was inspired to get the CD after watching a documentary about them. The music is feel good pure and simple, like Here Comes Summer with some great harmonies and of course Mike Smith truly wonderful voice as lead vocalist. I like Dave Clark drumming, from the opening uptempo beats of Glad All Over, the driving beat of Bits and Pieces, Wild Weekend, Don't Try To Hard and I Need Love combined with sax and keyboards to produce a powerful sound. The melodies and harmonies hook you and are remembered very easily, they are like anthems in a way like, Catch Us If You Can, I like It Like That and Everybody Get Together. There are some beautiful ballads in there, very well arranged instrumentally and vocally. Because is a particular favourite, also Crying Over You, Come Home, Hurting Inside and many more. It would be very difficult indeed not to start singing along too or tap your feet when hearing this music. I certainly enjoy it. Thanks DC5 and Amazon.
