This CD us a live performance from London in 1964, and I was so lucky to see her in 1965 live in Melbourne Australia, where she wowed the audience wwith exactly the same songs. her version of Charles Trenet's "I Wish You Love" is superb.
I have played tracks on community radio in Tasmania Australia (Tasman FM 97.7) and listeners have phoned me to say how much they enjoyed her performances. A true star.
Marlene Dietrich at her best. I was introduced to this Album in England back in the early Seventies. I have the Album but was so thrilled to be able to get a CD. Every song is beautifully sung by this timeless artist and the orchestration is equally exceptional. Most songs sung in English.
This is a nostalgic live performance in London, however, the sound isn't the best in spots. Its sometimes difficult to understand what she is singing and speaking softly between numbers, yet the horns are too blaring, especially at the end. I must constantly adjust the volume up then down to get through this. Maybe its just her style that is difficult to capture live.
It is good to have the live versions of these, since "Das Lied Ist Aus" isn't available live anywhere else but the vinyl Paris Cafe recording, not the CD of the same. This recording of that song is okay, but still, like the CD version, a bit heavy and exaggerated at the end. I'm used to hearing my vinyl recording of that song from the Paris Cafe, which is more subdued and elegant. In fact, that vinyl recording is more balanced in volume. If you can find that recording on vinyl and hear it, you will know what I mean. Its an argument for keeping a turntable hooked up to your system. Now if only I could turn it into an Apple lossless to enjoy it on ipod. Any suggestions? Why does the music industry always cheat us out of great things with bate and switch?
There should have been a comprehensive collection for Marlene, like the 10 disc one of Edith Piaf's from France, and not the two disc American version. The quality of that would all depend on who would put it together, and what they would include and restore or remaster.

Dietrich was a tireless performer who was still touring long after most of her peers were home knitting (if they were still alive). Many believe that her voice improved with age, and this recording of a live performance in London certainly supports that belief. The audience obviously loved her, and you can tell that she gave them a hell of a show. Very good stereo sound.
