Defiant, sexy, playful, nervy, womanly, and wise, 1988's Raw Like Sushi was the opening salvo in Neneh Cherry's brilliant, if woefully underappreciated, career. The hit "Buffalo Stance," with its reworking of Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals vibe, found Cherry erroneously labeled as a rap artist. True enough, there are hip-hop elements on Raw Like Sushi, as well as pop, electronic, R&B, and dance, all gleefully mixed up in a progressive melange of beats, cultures, emotions, and grooves. Besides being fierce, funky, and one of the best debuts in memory, Raw Like Sushi helped redefine what women could do in the rigid realm of late-'80s African American music, and it sounds as good today as it did the day it was released. --Amy Linden

"Buffalo Stance"という曲が一度聴いたら忘れられず、このアルバムを購入したのですが、"Manchild"、"Kisses on the wind"等シングルカットで大ヒットした曲が入っていて嬉しかったです。他の曲についても”ハズレ”の曲がひとつもなく、とても元気になれるお勧めのアルバムです。
Neneh Cherryはこのアルバムの後、90年代に更に人気がでましたが、私はこのアルバムが一番好きです。

ある日80'sのPVをBS-3で観てた時に「Buffalo Stance」が。初めて聴いたけど「おっ！」と、あっという間に気に入ってしまった。暫くの間YouTubeで聴いてたけどCD欲しいワ～と探してget出来ました。聴いてみたら他に「うわ！」これ良いわと更にノリの良い曲があって超お気に入りナンバーになってました。「Kisses On The Wind」と「Buffalo Stance」だけだったら★五つです。他の曲は私の好みじゃなかったけど買ってよかった。

「バッファロー・スタンス」という題名がインパクトが強くかった。曲をを初めて聴いたとき、なんてカッコイイ曲！と感動した。早速、アルバムを購入－ジャケットの写真もカッコイイと思ったら、あの「ジャン・バプティスト・モンディーノ」だった・・・カッコイイはずだ。内容もどれをとってもいい！！ちょっと鼻にかかった声でのラップも大好きになった。結局、ネナ・チェリーの人となり、ラップ、曲・・・全部気に入ってしまった。絶対聴く価値ありの一枚である。

Neneh Cherry is such a pioneer for female rappers, and she deserves so much more credit for her influence, so I had to get her debut album! This is going to be a gift for my mum's birthday so I hope she likes it!

Music has always had one premise to me: Women sing to the men and men sing to the women. Guys these day have that so confused. It's the same aesthetic with music videos (Beyonce and J-Lo shake their rumps to the benefit of us guys, much to the chagrin of our lady friends).

After getting over my crushes with Debbie Harry and Whitney Houston and my mental menage with Gioia, Jenette and Ann from Expose, in walks my new baby mama: a prego from the UK, dancing a jig in Spandex tights.

Neneh stood out to me because all of her songs were a step ahead of everything her American counterparts did at the time. I only saw Queen Latifah and MC Lyte's music videos, so maybe I'm making an unfair assumption, but their music did nothing for me. I had to look beyond Neneh's music video's and get a better perspective of her music by actually listening to Raw Like Sushi. Beyond Buffalo Stance, all the other songs made me view Neneh as more of a Goddess as opposed to a sex object, a respected person whereas today everyone markets themselves as mastubatory icons or heroines to disenfranchised teenagers.I just recently ordered Raw becaused I wanted to reconnect myself with Neneh's music because she was the most strongest crush I've had throughout my life. Beside Buffalo Stance, the other songs that move me are as follows: So Here I Come, Heart, Phoney Ladies, Love Ghetto, Inner City Mama. It would be so cool if all American female singers could be this deep.
