グルーブが凄い その上に乗っかって自由奔放に吹きまくるロリンズ、豪快にブローするロリンズが好きならば これと ブルーノート盤 「ニュークス・タイム」が オススメかもね。ビレッジバンガードは? あれは 最も自由なフォーマットを選択しておきながら ピアノ抜きな為 却って曲を成り立たせる為に 出さなきゃならん音に縛られている気がして イマイチ面白味に欠ける様な… 改めて思ったんですけど マックス・ローチって ピアノに何の価値も認めてないんですね! 唯一グルーブ主義つうか ローチのドラムって カラフルで ある意味 ピアノ的だからかな? だから ローチ=ブラウン・クインテットでも ピアノは目立たないんだね、故意に地味なピアニスト選んで 譜面通りに定常的なコードとリズムを提供すれば良い みたいなね。このアルバムは クリフォード抜きで 残りのメンバーとやっているセッションなんで もう ローチ大師匠やりたい放題(笑)凄い 凄過ぎる 気分爽快になれる大名盤ですわ! リマスターが また凄い 今回の プレステージのやつは ブルーノートのに較べて ワタシの中で「余りの劇的な音質向上に椅子から転げ落ちる」度(笑)が高い! ヴァン・ゲルダー翁に感謝! 全てのジャズファンと 「ジャズのドラムはつまんないから嫌いだ」と思ってるロック野郎(笑) 「何だかムシャクシャするなあぁ〜アァもう!スカッとしてぇーっ」って時には これ かなりオススメ致します!(とほほの助)

有名な「サキソフォン・コロッサス」の前年に録音されたアルバムで「ショウほど素敵な商売はない」と「イッツ・オールライト・ウィズ・ミー」の名演で知られています。
「サキソフォン・コロッサス」がロリンズのオリジナル曲中心で、緻密な構成で悠々と聴かせるのに対し、この「ワーク・タイム」はスタンダード曲中心で躍動感があり、一気に聴かせます。「サキソフォン・コロッサス」よりも明快でわかりやすいのではじめてソニーロリンズのアルバムを聴くという方は本作品のほうが良いかもしれません。
ピアノのレイ･ブライアント、ドラムのマックス･ローチといった共演者の演奏も良く、手元においておきたいJAZZアルバムです。

　いまわたしは猛烈に興奮している。本作を聴いているからだ。漲るパワー！この風格！凄い！凄すぎる！ここまでこないと五つ星はあげられない。大の男が酔っ払ってクドクド泣き言を並べるような「ゼア・アー・サッチ・シングス」は、ロリンズの数あるバラード演奏のなかでも屈指のでき。ロリンズにしか語れない人生劇場だ。

モダンジャズは門外漢にはとかく分かりにくいものですが、このアルバムの「ショウほど素敵な商売は無い」は、その魅力を非常に分かりやすく伝えてくれます。大変ポピュラーなミュージカルの名曲をうまくジャズに料理しています。ジャズは暗く陰のある曲を好むことが多いですが、ソニー・ロリンズはこの曲といい、『サキソフォン・コロッサス』の「セント・トーマス」といい、陰のない明るい曲をジャズに取り入れる独特の趣向を持っていますね。

マックス・ローチのドラムも楽しく、モダンジャズとしての技巧の高さも示しながら音楽のエンターテインメントとしての側面もちゃんと伝えているので、「ジャズは楽しいんだ」ということがストレートに伝わる非常に良いアルバムだと思います。ぼくはこのアルバムを聴いて初めてジャズに開眼しました。

星ひとつ少ないのは、レイ・ブライアントのピアノがちょっとパターンに陥り勝ちかなという印象があるためです。

This is not one of Rollins' best known records but it is certainly one of his best. He is on fine form throughout and is backed by an exemplary rhythm section consisting of Ray Bryant, George Morrow and Max Roach. It dates from 1955 when Rollins, Morrow and Roach were all members of the Brown - Roach quintet. The band are certainly together. They play five tunes, all of which range between five and nine minutes and so give time for the soloists to stretch out without overstaying their welcome. The total playing time is 32 minutes, which is a little on the short side but far better that than twice the length from lesser players.
Rollins throughout plays superbly. His tone, not always the case at this time in his career, is vibrant and full. He swings hard and his playing is imaginative and emotional. He is probably one of the half dozen greatest players on the tenor saxophone in the history of the music and shows it in every note he plays here.. Bryant, in a sense the odd man out in this band, plays extremely well, fluent, swinging and original. I have always enjoyed his blues playing when with more mainstream company, but listening to his thoughtful and imaginative work here I have to regret he did not play more frequently in the type of surroundings there are here. George Morrow is probably the least known member of the band but plays very well, firmly supportive and always swinging. Roach, on the drums, is on good form, swinging and propulsive. He has enormous technical ability, which here is devoted to musical ends and not simple display. He does solo (when does he not?) but not to excess.
There is one original composition, 'Paradox'. the other four numbers being the lesser known standards Rollins relishes, including 'There's No Business Like Show Business', 'Raincheck', 'There Are Such Things' and 'It's All Right With Me'. There is no point in reviewing them individually as all are without weakness.

In his insightful chapter on Sonny Rollins in his book, Jazz Masters of the Fifties, jazz historian and critic Joe Goldberg comments about Worktime, recorded on December 2, 1955 at Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack, NJ studio, that "many, including his close friend, the soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, still feel that it is the best record Rollins ever made." Goldberg goes on to describe Worktime in some detail: "Working with a rhythm section made up of Roach, Brown-Roach bassist George Morrow, and pianist Ray Bryant, Rollins turned such an unlikely tune as There's No Business Like Show Business, a nearly forgotten ballad called There Are Such Things, a breakneck-tempo It's All Right With Me and two other songs [Rollins' Paradox and Strayhorn's Raincheck] into a powerful, moving statement of purpose. Playing with a deliberately 'harsh' tone, but with little vibrato, Rollins was obviously in command of his instrument. There was, with the release of Worktime, a major new jazz voice."

Highly recommended for all fans of Sonny Rollins and also for fans of 1950s hard-bop jazz.

Di quest'opera mi mancava il formato CD e finalmente mi e' arrivato, vi dico subito che suona da paura, se avete un lettore come si deve ne apprezzerete la sua grande consistenza strumentale, i 5 brani sono uno piu' bello dell'altro, io adoro il quinto, Sonny Rollins si scatena in un interplay mirabolante, anche perche' e supportato da una parte ritmica che dire da favola e' poca cosa.
Se poi.. avete la possibilita' di ascoltare anche il vinile originale della Prestige Records capirete di cosa parlo.
Sempre che riuscite a trovarlo. Ma questa e' un'altra storia.

This excellent quartet album by the great tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins(b. 1930) was recorded for PRESTIGE in Hackensack, New Jersey on December 2, 1955 with a superb rhythm section of Ray Bryant(piano); George Morrow(bass) & Max Roach(drums).
Rollins is in imperious form on his 'Paradox'(5:00); Billy Strayhorn's 'Raincheck'(6:02) and the standards 'There Are Such Things'(9:31) & 'It's All Right With Me'(6:09) plus the unlikely 'There's No Business Like Show Business'(6:21).
Apparently, Miles Davis was so excited when he heard the test pressings of 'Worktime' he played some tracks repeatedly and rang tenor saxophonist Allen Eager to share the recordings with him.
Despite the short playing-time of 33 minutes this RVG Remastered edition(2009) sounds wonderful and is an indispensable Sonny Rollins album that deserves to be more widely known.

Serious Rollins fans prefer this lost classic to Saxophone Colossus. Sonny's harmonic and rhythmic brilliance shine throughout. With Worktime Rollins proved to be the greatest tenor saxophone player in the world.
Miles Davis was so floored when he heard the original acetate that he played it over and over at the Prestige office in NYC. Miles was so blown away that he phoned Allen Eager and played the tapes over the phone. This is also one of the best sounding Rudy Van Gelder remasters. Rollins, Roach, Bryant, and Morrow can all be heard with clarity and depth.
No jazz lover should be without Worktime.
