The great tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins(b. 1930) recorded many albums for PRESTIGE and other labels during 1956 including his masterpiece 'Saxophone Colossus'. 'Tour de Force' was recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey on December 7, 1956 with Kenny Drew(piano); George Morrow(bass); Max Roach(drums) & Earl Coleman(vocals) on 'Two Different Worlds' & 'My Ideal'. Rollins contributes three 'originals', the blues 'Ee-Ah' and the furiously fast 'B.Quick'(based on 'Cherokee') & 'B.Swift'(based on 'Lover') The Billy Eckstine-style singer Earl Coleman, who recorded with Charlie Parker in 1947, is an acquired taste, but the two romantic songs are sensitively accompanied by Rollins("Sonny's in love", Max Roach commented at the time). Although not a classic, 'Tour de Force' contains plenty of inventive and exhilarating modern jazz from 1956 that's well worth hearing.
