This fascinating quartet session was led by bassist Red Mitchell in Los Angeles on March 26, 1957 and includes the underrated James Clay on tenor & flute, pianist Lorraine Geller and drummer Billy Higgins. The seven tracks include a standard, 'Cheek to Cheek', two Mitchell originals and tunes by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and Clifford Brown. Interestingly, all the members of the quartet have some links to free jazz altoist Ornette Coleman but the music here is bop-influenced and should appeal to anyone who enjoys swinging, straightahead jazz.
