Mid-summer 1961, the evening of July 16th, at the old Five Spot in New York City. The quintet of Eric Dolphy, playing bass clarinet and alto sax, Booker Little on trumpet, Mal Waldron on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Eddie Blackwell on drums. Tragically, Dolphy, 33 years old at the time of these sessions, would die just three years later in Berlin, of a heart attack probably compounded by diabetes. Little had preceded him in death just three months after these sessions, of uremia. He was only 23. Two superb jazz artists whose careers were cut tragically short.
Three sessions were recorded that evening, all with recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder and released on individual LP albums as well as subsequently released as individual CDs:
- At the Five Spot, Volume 1 - At the Five Spot 2, Volume 2 ** originally released on LP and CD with only two tracks, "Aggression" and "Like Someone in Love", the remaster of this vol 2 now also includes the full contents of the Memorial Album - Memorial Album
All three of these albums have also been combined into the 2-CD set At the Five Spot Complete Edition
This Memorial Album consists of just two long tracks, with 32 minutes of music altogether:
- Number Eight (Potsa Lotsa) - Booker's Waltz
The liner notes include a nice essay on the two artists and the Five Spot sessions, written by Robert Levin.
Although not even half full, this is an enjoyable CD, well recorded and an acceptable value when available here on Amazon from third party sellers in good used condition, as I obtained it. Or, it can be obtained by purchasing the remaster of Vol 2 as noted above, or by purchasing the complete edition 2-disc set. Both the remaster of Vol 2 and the complete edition set are available new on Amazon at the present time. (Take care to closely examine listings for these recordings on Amazon, as they can be found on multiple listings some of which are not clearly described and could be the original non-remastered releases).
An enjoyable record of a special night in New York City, never to be repeated.
Four stars only because of the brief total length of the album. Performance and recording quality are first class.
While anything with Dolphy is worth having in my opinion, this CD contains a couple of extra songs that were left off the Live at the Five Spot sessions. The rhythm section is very prominent in the 2 longs songs. CD only about 30 to 35 minutes. Would have been much better if these were packaged with one of the original CDs, which weren't overly song.
