７２年発表の３ｒｄ。ヴァーティゴからアイランドに移籍して発表されたパトゥのラスト・アルバム。ハルソール／パトゥなどハルソールを中心とした共作曲が一気に増えており、バンドの結束が更に強まっているが、おそらくはセールスが結果として良くなかったのだろう。グループは本作の後、７３年に次作へのデモ録音を行なうものの解散している。（ちなみにその音源は９５年に『MONKEY'S BUM』として蔵出しされている。）パトゥ解散後、ハルソールはテンペスト、マイク・パトゥはスプーキー・トゥースなどを経て再び合流。ボクサーを結成する。
１．はヴォイスとピアノによる現代音楽風のイントロを経て骨太のドラムスとピアノによる変則リズムを導入したジャズっぽい演奏に突入。徐々にポップに展開してヴォーカルが入るとＲ＆Ｂスタイルのポップ曲になるという短い間に変幻自在に変化する彼らの方向性を上手く示した一曲。全編でピアノとドラムスがリードし続けるが、ヴォーカルもそれに負けないくらいに存在感を発揮している。時折入る甘いコーラスも雰囲気満点だが、ソロともインタープレイともとれるピアノは必聴ものの聞き応えがある。２．はＲ＆Ｂ／ファンク路線の佳曲。マイクのヴォーカルがいかに本格的であるかがこの曲を聞けば一発で分かるが、バッキングでもすさまじく上手いハルソールのギターも聞き物。彼らの基本的な上手さを満喫出来る素晴らしい一曲である。３．はおふざけっぽいアカペラ曲。４．はストレートなハード・ロック。きしむギターのサウンドが心地よく、多くのハード・ロックのファンが悶絶する仕上がりだと思う。

彼らはポップ・スターとして世に出ることより、中学校の同級生が遊んでいるかのように好きなことをやりまくりたかったのではないか。そんなことを感じさせるアルバムで、センセーショナル・アレックス・ハーベイ・バンドの仲の良さを思い出してしまいます。1. Flat Footed Woman は、オリー・ハルソールのジャズ・ピアノと、ジョン・ハルセーの変態ドラミングを長尺で聴かせる曲。物凄くテクニカルなのに、曲はふざけまくっています。2. Singing The Blues On Reds でもマイク・パトゥが演じているのは「ファンクの帝王」なのでしょう。

3. Mummy はハルセーのおふざけにメンバーが付き合っているだけ。マミーと危険なお遊びをしているわけですが、迫真の演技に最後噴き出さざるをえません。肝心のオリーのギターは4. Loud Green Song ではじめて出てきます。この演奏が（上手いんだけど）クレイジーでクレイジーで、アラン・ホールズワースをおちょくっているようにしか聞こえません。（このあとオリーはホールズワースと同じバンドになるわけなのですが…）

まともなハードロックはどこにもない。でも彼らに愛着がわくこと必至です。ボクサーやラトルズは突然変異でなくて、このアルバムの延長だったわけですね。

内容が素晴らしいことは言うまでもなく、
詳細は、他のRevewerの方に譲りますが、星4つです。
但し、CD毎に当たり外れがあるので、その点について少々。

edsel盤(1995)
おそらく、最初にCD化されたものだと思います。
音の分離や音圧という点では、Flawed Gems盤、ESOTERIC盤に譲りますが、音が悪いということではありません。
楽器の音という点では、むしろ最も自然な音が聴けるCDではないでしょうか。
各楽器のバランスもよく、このアルバムの良さが一番感じられるCDかもしれません。

Flawed Gems盤(2011)
高音がきつく、ドラムが大きすぎて、聴いてると、耳が痛くなります。
全体として音圧が高く仕上げてあるので、ドラムの音に他のパートが埋もれるということはありませんが、
バランスが悪く、聴いてると非常に疲れます。
聴きとおすのも一苦労なので、曲の良さ、アルバムの良さを感じる以前の問題だと思います。
リリース当初は、目玉だったBBC7曲も、
全曲、Hanging Rope(On the Air 2016)で聴けるようになり、
＃9～13はHold Your Fire(ESOTERIC 2017)のボーナスディスクでも,
#14,15はPatto(ESOTERIC 2017)のボートラでも聴けます。
(15はSan Antoneでなく、Govement Manです)
敢えてこのFlawed Gems盤を買う必然性はないと思います。

ESOTERIC盤(2017)
edsel盤の音の分離を良くして、音圧もやや上げた、仕上がりになってます。
やや不自然な音な気もしますが、Flawed Gems盤のようなバランスの悪さはなく、聴きやすいです。
3曲のボーナストラックは、いずれもオフィシャルにはここでしか聴けない点も＋です。

edsel盤あるいはESOTERIC盤のいずれかがお薦めですが、ボートラの分、ESOTERIC盤が良いかもしれません。
少なくとも、ボートラの曲数に騙されて、Flawed Gems盤だけは買わないようにしましょう。
尚、Heavey Feather盤(2000)は未所持です。
あと、もう1枚HF9616という謎のCDも所持していますが、これはブートかなと思っています。

１９７２年リリースのブリティッシュロック名バンド・パトゥーのサードアルバム・・・ＣＤで入手しやすくなり嬉しい限りです。ジャケットはかなり期待させるのですが、内容は実験的なアプローチもあり散漫な印象は否めません。私の大好きなオリーハルソールのギタープレイも控えめで、むしろ彼の得意とするピアノが目立ったりします。しかし４曲目「ラウドグリーンソング」でオリーの変態ギター炸裂で解消されます・・・必聴のかっこいいハードな曲！！オリーハルソールファンは、必ず入手しておくべきアルバムです！！

When I first bought this album on a whim back in the 70s I absolutely loved it - the musicianship, the humor... however I could not get anybody else to even listen to it because it didn't sound like Grand Funk Railroad or The Guess Who or Santana (as good as they all are). Some of my musician friends eventually came around when I forced them to listen to Ollie Halsall's incredible soloing on "Loud Green Song" and they conceded that he was a great, early precursor to other avant garde players like Vernon Reid and Tom Morello who both went on to expand the limits of rock guitar. 50 years later this is still the song I play when I want to show an example of true 1970s guitar virtuosity. It never ceases to impress music lovers. Unfortunately Patto never caught on and eventually fell apart.

After the subsequent "Boxer" albums (a more pop oriented version of Patto), Mike Patto did a stint with Spooky Tooth, and Ollie and drummer John Halsey got involved with the multi media Rutles project. Halsey played Rutles drummer Barrington Womble (shortened to Barry Wom in order to save Brylcreem) and Halsall played a British police officer who was beaten up by little girls who were Rutles fans.

Ollie also spent some time with Jon Hiseman's Tempest, splitting guitar duties with Alan Holdsworth, which was, by far, the most boggling guitar tandem ever. Eventually Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall both succumbed to serious illnesses and that was that for Patto.

As of this date there is a Patto box set titled "Give it all Away - the Albums 1970 - 1973" set to be released on May 28, 2021 by Esoteric Records, which features all 4 Patto albums plus extra tracks. It will definitely not be for everyone but it will be for me.

Il mio è un giudizio molto di parte perchè sono un fan del gruppo già da quando era sostanzialmente misconosciuto.
Ho tutte le edizioni, tra vinili e CD. Questa edizione è molto ben curata è il suono rimasterizzzato e ben suonante e pulito.
Lo consiglio a tutti i fans del gruppo e anche e sopratutto a chi vuole ascoltare buona musica che ancorchè datata anni '70 è come se fosse stata scritta oggi. Consigliatissimi anche PATTO, Hold Your Fire e l'inedito nel '70, Monkey Bum.

One of the most irreverent & effortlessly brilliant recordings of all time by perhaps the most tragic group of all: two members sadly now dead & one to this day unable to remember anything about his musical career. But no pathos or navel-gazing here; this is pure joy from start to finish. The quality of the singing, playing & songwriting is on a different planet to 95% of rock music. It mixes rock, jazz, blues & soul, all infused with insane, scatalogical humour: the exuberance of this record is utterly infectious. Impossible to compare them to anyone else. Patto stand alone to this day; far too good & far too concerned with enjoying themselves to have ever been commercially successful. Their 1st 2 LPs are great too but this is their finest moment. If you enjoy great rock music & don't take it too seriously, this is for you.

You can feel the fun the group had making this and musically Mike's tinkering on the keys with awesome guitar work from Ollie Halsall and Bernie Holland advertise their talent. This remastered ( Flawed Gems ) album with extra tracks ( nearly 80 mins in total ) of varied styles brings back memories of when I bought the original vinyl.....and yes, Loud Green Song sound's just as cutting a rock track as was around then and hasn't lost anything in time. Much under the radar, it's not a flawed gem it's a treasured one....enjoy.

I had this album on vinal in the early 70's and just had to have it on CD. I'm glad I did. I still think this is one of the most creative blues bands ever let alone from the 70's. This is a classic and a must have for any audiophile.
