This collection from the Volt label is not issued in Europe as far as I know. The Bar-Kays were ahead of their time with 2 drummers and bluesy lead guitar. Son of Shaft was their big number at the time but if you want to illustrate what 'funky music' means try IIn the Hole. My absolute favourite is the atmospheric Memphis Sunrise,, but the standard overall is high.
The Bar-Kays are among the most underrated funk groups of all the time, particularly their Stax period, the best of which is compiled here. Strangely, this collection doesn't include their first and biggest hit, Soul Finger, but the omission isn't a problem. What you get is a bunch of hard funk tunes with rock undertones, which would later be used by the likes of the RZA to underpin classic songs by GZA and Raekwon. Sitting in the middle of the disc is the funk monster that is Holy Ghost, sounding somewhat out of place, but acting as a fantastic centrepiece nonetheless. The total running time is only 45 minutes, so this is a consistently thrilling greatest hits collection, not a flabby two disc set with tons of padding as we've been accustomed to. Highly recommended once you've got your dose of Funkadelic, JB, Family Stone, and looking for something else to satisfy the funk cravings.
