A beautifully full, sweetly melodic pop album that is so lush with sound, it takes a few listens to realize that, remarkably, all the songs are performed with only acoustic instruments. Rhythm guitars provide a thick mattress on which the rest of the elements gently bounce. No single note rises above another. The well-harmonized vocals blend perfectly with the rest of the instruments. The lyrics are fanciful plays on words, but they're sung so earnestly that one still finds relevance and meaning in them. "Obscurity Knocks" and "Only Tongue Can Tell" are the best examples of cleverly skewed lyrics supported by elegant melodies. Overall, Cakeis a wonderful acoustic accomplishment. --Beth Bessmer

The Trash Can Sinatras ♪　オレンジ色の空を見上げて。

ジャケットのイメージそのまま、オレンジ色の空の下で奏でられるキラキラなアコースティックサウンド。１曲目『obscurtity knocks』爽やかに始まり後半に向かって徐々に上がって広がっていく音がなんともホント素晴らしいです。なので２曲目以降になかなか進めません、繰り返して聴き惚れてます、それほどこの１曲が大好きです。自分が思う『ネオアコ』とはコレ! そんなサウンドが溢れてます。リマスター盤は音もクリアでますますキレイに響く音楽です。青く駆け抜ける青春POP#6『circling the circumference』も見事、超オススメなアルバムです。

高校生の時、某日本のバンドが①を元ネタにしていた事から
彼らの存在を知った。
初めて聞いた時の感激は今でも覚えている。
①のイントロ！！

ネオ・アコースティックの大名曲「Obscurity Knocks」を聴いてください！

1曲目「Obscurity Knocks」のイントロを聴いたときは「おっ、これは！」と思い1曲目が終わった時には「Aztec Cameraの発展形のグループか？」とも思ったが、なんのことはない、アルバム・トータルでみると1曲目だけが大名曲であとはたいしたことがないグループだった。
その後何枚かCDを購入し聴いてみたがやはり「Obscurity Knocks」を越える曲がなかった。
よって私にとってはThe Trash Can Sinatras は「Obscurity Knocks」1曲だけのグループでしかない。
ただこの1曲だけでも買った価値があったと思わせるアルバムである。(1990年発表のアルバム)。

Trash calm Sinatra s.
Je les écoutais sur Oui Fm en 1990/ 1995 avec le titre " alone".
Le dit titre ne se trouve pas dans l'album.
Pour ma part ; c'est la catastrophe !

Même le timbre du chanteur si agréable à entendre m'oblige à déclarer que cela ne méritait pas d'être zappé.
Non ; je me suis vraiment trompé.
Album insipide et sans attrait vraiment ; même en réécoutant.....

Probably my favourite album from one of my favourite bands of all time. They are so melodic and wonderful to listen to. You can't go wrong with some Cake from The Trashcan Sinatras. Highly recommended!

Had this on cassette about 1991 but tape got mangled a few years later. Finally found this on cd at a decent price. Brilliant debut album, I've got all the others since. Lots of guitars and witty lyrics. The band are still going and should be way bigger than they are. Superb!

Sounding as if it were being levitated forth like a petal being carried away from a flower by the gust of a gentle breeze, the melody line of "Even The Odd", the fourth track from Trashcan Sinatras' debut release, 1990's "Cake", is an almost perfect encapsulation of the band's reliance on largely buoyant acoustic guitar work and organic instrumentation to drive their songs forward. As one reviewer has already pointed out, the band was treading ground already trailblazed by The Smiths, The Housemartins, and Aztec Camera, but what made "Cake" so distinctive was the rich texture of melody that characterized even their most up-tempo tracks, "Circling The Circumfrence" and "Maybe I Should Drive".

And though the band includes the sensitive, wistfully nuanced ballads "The Best Man's Fall", "Funny", and "You Made Me Feel", the most cohesive tracks are "Obscurity Knocks", "Even The Odd", "Only Tongue Can Tell", and "January's Little Joke". Insistent without sounding aggressive and unwinding through a loping, fluid progression, the songs are lushly arranged and so patiently constructed that I never get tired of listening to them. The vocals are delivered in a warm, impassioned cadence and the harmonies, while not bringing, say, "Only Tongue Can Tell" to an explosive climax, create a nice sense of dynamic tension within these moderate-tempo tracks.

Released 21 years ago, "Cake" is a recording that has done nothing but improve with age, sounding neither dated nor irrelevant, but both for a moment and for all time. I had trouble tracking down a replacement for my original copy, as this CD has been out-of-print for awhile, but Amazon does offer it. No fan of The Smiths, The Housemartins, The Sundays, or other bands such as these should be missing out on this.
