If Metallica and Slayer invented speed metal, Anthrax brought it to the East Coast and imbued it with the attitude and excitement of New York hardcore. Among The Living is their finest hour--a roaring, adrenaline-pumped collection of flailing beats, precise, razor-edged riffs and shout-along refrains. Unlike most full-throttle metal vocalists of the era, Joey Belladonna chose to sing as well as shout, giving songs such as "Among The Living", "Indians" and "Efilnikcufecin" ("nice fuckin' life" spelled backwards) a decided melodic edge. Yet Scott Ian and Dan Spitz's buzz saw guitar flurries, and Charlie Benante's insistent drumming, prevented the songs from ever degenerating into the run-of-the-mill heavy metal they so despised. --Jon Wiederhorn

スラッシュ四天王の中では、アンスラックスが一番さわやかに聞こえる。サウンドエンジニアに、エディ・クレイマーが参加と書かれているので、気のせいか音質自体も、この時期では聞きやすいと思える。
これなら、スケボーに乗りやすいスラッシュだ。
ただ、アンスラックスという名前は皮肉にも、１番しんどくなるというね、可哀相。

my favorite thrash albumの一つです。
僕は普段四天王ではslayerばかり聴いてる人なんでanthraxはちょっと曲調が軽いかな？
という印象はありますが、彼らのザクザクギターにはホントにハマります！
anthrax独特のこのリズミカルなザクザクギターを存分に聴けるのはこの3rdだと思うし（2ndは
どちらかというとメロディを重視した曲が多いように思う）、caught in a moshやindiansといった
代表曲も多いので、anthraxを初めて聴く人にはオススメです。
特にi am the lawがカッコイイ。
また、なんといってもジョーイ・ベラドナの歌唱力。
個人的にはジョン・ブッシュ期より断然ジョーイ・ベラドナ期ですね。

僕がまで中学生の頃。
metallicaが大好きでした。young guitar誌のアルバムレビューでこのアルバムのレビュー記事がありました。興味はありましたが、当時はすぐに買えるようなお小遣いもなく、しばらくたってから次アルバムのステートオブユーフォリアが発表になり、そちらを購入し、among the livingはそのままとなっていました。
しかし、pure rockで見たIndiansのPVが忘れられない・・・。

大人になって改めて聞いても鮮明にあの頃の記憶が蘇ります。

米国ニューヨーク出身のスラッシュメタル・バンドAnthraxが、1987年に出した3rdアルバムです。前作同様本作も、Anthraxというバンドの名盤、そしてスラッシュメタル史に残る歴史的名盤として知られています。

名曲やライヴでの定番曲も多く、頭を空っぽにしてハイテンションで暴れるに相応しい作品です。スラッシュ度は前作より確実に上がっており、Anthrax全作品のうち、最もスラッシュメタルらしい作品と言えるでしょう。

いかにもオープニングらしい重厚な幕開けの#1 "Among the Living" は、そのヘヴィなイントロが明けると一気に速度を上げる快活な疾走曲。裏打ちではなく頭打ちのリズムが、直線的なノリと勢いを生み出しています。緩急の使い分けもグレイト。

#2 "Caught in a Mosh" もライヴの人気曲。アップテンポのイントロ、しかしヴォーカルパートでいきなり疾走。中間部でちょっとテンポを落とす緩急のダイナミズム。攻撃的でありながらキャッチーで親しみやすい、Anthrax流スラッシュを象徴する曲です。

#6 "Indians" も名曲ですね。Iron Maidenを思わせる勇壮なツインリードのイントロから一気に加速。インディアンの血を引くジョーイが、インディアンの悲劇について歌ったメッセージ性の強い曲。しかしシリアスさの中にもキャッチーさやノリの良さがあるのもAnthraxならでは。

ラストの#9 "Imitation of Life" は序盤こそちょっとダルい感じのミドルパートですが、そこから鬼のような刻みリフが炸裂する激烈疾走パートに突入。前作の "Gung-Ho" もそうですが、アルバムの最後に一番盛り上がる曲を持ってくる。最高ですね。早口にまくしたて、サビ部分で「アーーーハーーー！！！」とシャウトするヴォーカルも強烈過ぎ。

BIG 4の一角を担うだけあって、非常に強烈なスラッシュ・アルバムです。攻撃性とキャッチーさの両立。5人の高い実力が拮抗した緊張感溢れるアンサンブル。それでいて聴き手を楽しませることに特化した曲作りのセンス。

前作と甲乙つけがたい出来ですが、個人的にはAnthraxが最も勢いに乗っていた時期の、最高傑作だと思います。

1986-87 were big years for fans of heavy metal. First, Metallica released the legendary MASTER OF PUPPETS; then, Slayer and Megadeth put out REIGN IN BLOOD and PEACE SELLS...BUT WHO'S BUYING? (respectively). It's not hard to imagine that, in 1987, the bar was set astronomically high for metal fans, but in March of that year, Anthrax not only matched that standard, but arguably exceeded it with AMONG THE LIVING, introducing the world of thrash metal to an interesting alchemy of metal, punk, and pseudo-rap and pioneering a style of thrash all their own.

AMONG THE LIVING is characterized by its fast songs, powerful guitar riffs, and political awareness. The line-up at the time consisted of Scott Ian on rhythm guitar, Joey Belladonna on vocals, Charlie Benante on drums, Frank Bello on bass, and Dan Spitz on lead guitar. (This incarnation of Anthrax would go on to record two more full-length studio albums and is affectionately known as the classic Anthrax line-up.) Beginning the album is the title track "Among the Living," a quintessential thrash song with its brutal fast pace; Belladonna's energetic vocal performance amplifies the intensity, and Benante's thunderous double-bass patterns (showing that he can hang toe-to-toe with Slayer's Dave Lombardo) tear through the mix to drive the song all the way home. The second and third tracks are two concert mainstays, "Caught in a Mosh" and "I Am The Law." The former boasts a growling bass intro leading into another classic thrasher with a simple but catchy refrain; "I Am The Law," meanwhile, locks in an early groove and maintains a mid-tempo approach (at least, for a while), giving the song's lyrics (about a "bad-ass cop") a chance to find its space.

While "I Am The Law" contains strong cultural references (to comic book icon Judge Dredd), "Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)" truly makes a statement about 1980s pop culture by revisiting the downfall of cinema star John Belushi. Anthrax, with a scathing tone, remarks, "So funny and smart, so talented./But success just couldn't fit!" References to pop culture would be a signature of Anthrax, showing that the band is never too egotistical to consider its roots and write a song that relates to the people. Another one of Anthrax's concert mainstays, the sixth track entitled "Indians," features a more serious political tone but is nonetheless still a musical heavyweight; the famous "war dance" breakdown in the middle of the song is absolutely conducive to excessive moshing at Anthrax concerts, making "Indians" one of the band's most popular tunes with the fans. "One World" follows suite with its activist lyrical content ("America, stop singing 'Hail to the Chief.'/Instead of thinking 'S.D.I.,' he should be thinking of peace.") but mimics the opening track in pace and intensity. Closing the album out are "A.D.I./Horror of it All" and "Imitation of Life." "A.D.I.," one of Anthrax's many acronym song titles, stands for "Arabian Douche Intro," a reference to the exotic acoustic intro of the song (a Dan Spitz original). "Imitation" summarizes what a good portion of the thrash movement was all about: To attack and defeat "posers," wherever they exist. Indeed, just as the Bay Area metal bands were rebelling against L.A. glam music, Anthrax in New York ridiculed the concept of "selling out" to achieve notoriety and money.

It has been twenty-three years since the album's release, but Anthrax is still performing songs from AMONG THE LIVING with the same vigor that has always been expected. Now, with "classic line-up" vocalist Joey Belladonna back in the band, it's an exciting time to be an Anthrax fan. As the "Big Four" tour is commencing in Europe, one has to reflect on what a powerful two-and-a-half decades of metal it has been. Anthrax has released quite an impressive catalog of music, but if there is one album that can summarize what the band is all about, it is AMONG THE LIVING. All metal fans must pick it up: You will not be disappointed.
