This is one of those great Rossinian singing competitions in which everyone--and, in particular, the listeners--wins. Composed as a piece of occasional entertainment for the coronation of Charles X in Paris, Rossini borrowed liberally from his recent comic success Le Comte Ory and fashioned a musical necklace chock filled with one shiny bauble after another. Each character has a showpiece aria, from the highs of soprano Cecilia Gasdia as a melodramatic poetess all the way down to the basso realms of Samuel Ramey and Ruggero Raimondi. The ensembles are as delicious as the solos, and Claudio Abbado, in a very theatrical mood (this was recorded live) keeps everything going wittily and with great elan. The plot is practically nonexistent, but with singing like this, it's hard to complain. A real dazzler--and great fun. --Robert Levine

I had not heard of this particular opera and bought it on the strength of Samuel Ramey's participation. What a joy the opera is, sheer perfection, with the ensemble cast in great form. Buy a set, I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

È la celebre registrazione del Viaggio a Reims (prima registrazione mondiale assoluta) diretto da Claudio Abbado, con un cast stellare (Cecilia Gasdia, Lucia Valentini Terrani, Katia Ricciarelli, Ruggero Raimondi, Enzo Dara ecc. ecc.). Non si contano i premi che ha ricevuto, e meritatamente. Libretto dell'opera con traduzione tedesca, inglese e francese.

This set is really an astounding success in all respects. The score for Il Viaggio a Reims had been missing for more than a century before it was reassembled from various parts in various places and performed in 1984 (and subsequently recorded). And it does, indeed, turn out to be one of Rossini's major works, even though much of the music will be familiar to many listeners from Rossini's reuse in later works (Le Comte Ory, in particular). Rossini himself considered it to be an occasional piece and nothing more - it was written for the coronation of Charles X - and hence withdrew it after its very successful premiere. Which is, of course, inexplicable, insofar as the music is among the very best and most striking the composer ever wrote.

There isn't much of a plot here; the characters are (stereotypes) from different countries, which provides Rossini with an excuse to put in some local color in what is, really, a very innocuous and celebratory work (ending in a celebration of the glory of France). Still, the level of invention that went into the work is nothing less than astonishing - here is one memorable moment after another, and delightful arias and ensembles to rival the best he did elsewhere. The work is also influenced by the fact that Rossini had access to a variety of star singers; in other words, there is a plethora of technically challenging roles, each adjusted to the original singers. And it is indeed impressive that the recording at hand manages, with such complete success, to fill the roles with an equally impressive cast of different, masterly vocalist. You'll rarely find a cast to challenge the one here.

I don't really see any point in going into the details - they are all superb, even the minor roles; in fact, we get one stunningly wonderful performance, technically impeccable and full of character, bubbling with joy and spirit, after another - with no discernible weak link. The Prague Philharmonic Chorus is excellent and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe plays with energy, finesse and spirit an Abbado shapes the work in a manner that is really beyond criticism. The sound quality is very good as well, and while Viaggio might not be Rossini's absolutely strongest work, this recording shouldn't be missed.
