I have known about this recording ever since its release, but never heard it until this week. The list of singers is a dream (Domingo, Norman, Moll) but it was expensive to purchase and I already had Karajan’s supremely magnificent recording as well as the Philips Knappertsbusch. And the reviews of this Parsifal were almost all uniformly bad.
Well, I should have known to ignore critics!
This is a truly magnificent recording of Wagner’s masterpiece. And while the New York Met orchestra plays fabulously, it’s their choral counterparts that thrill. You’ll never hear the great choral passages as good as this.
And then there are the soloists. They are as glorious as you’d imagine them to be. Jessye Norman’s luminous voice makes for the finest Kundry on record. Placido Domingo has that beautiful tenor tone that so many heldentenors don’t. If you want to hear a youthful Parsifal in prime voice, this is it. And Kurt Moll sounds as magnificent as he does in Karajan’s great recording. And if you miss José van Dam as Amfortas, James Morris’ tone is arguably more appropriate in this part - and he sings the role wonderfully. Yes, this is surely the absolute best sung Parsifal you’ll ever hear. You simply cannot get better!
Levine received much criticism for his interpretation - everyone pointing out how slow and lacklustre it is. Well, it is slower, but it is magnificent, thrilling, powerful and enthralling, and by the time we reach the transformation in Act 3 we are moved and thrilled beyond words. This is a glorious interpretation.
Yes, buy or keep Karajan, as that is a masterly recording. But get this too, if you can find it - as, alas, I think it may currently be out of print. (Which just goes to show the damaging influence critics can have!)
I really wish I’d heard this recording sooner and chastise myself for taking note of the critics!

Beautifully played and sung. Right tempo- a little faster the Levine's Bayreuth Parsifal which I also like.

Levine's Great Parsifal
The star of this CD is James Levine and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. The tempi are very broad but Levine gets his players to perform with amazing concentration so that the impossibly long lines never sag and always maintain a sense of direction. The more delicate moments of accompaniment have a chamber-music kind of intimacy. The outstanding singer is Kurt Moll (Gurnemanz) who performs with great ardor and dignity. James Morris (Ammfortas) is also excellent. Jessye Norman's (Kundry) handsome, many-hued voice puts her ahead of most in the pack, and she (and all others in the cast) sing the rhythms accurately. Some listeners, however, may be troubled by German vowels that are all over the map and by a few odd intonation lapses. It speaks volumes for a recording when one can say that Placido Domingo (Parsifal) is the weakest singer, but despite his great artistry and despite his heroic effort at every turn, there is no getting around the salient fact that he is not a real heldentenor. There are no perfect Parsifal performances, but this one is as good as one is ever going to find

Sehr getragener Parsifal
Also ein zwiespältiger Eindruck.
