Many listeners will be surprised to learn that Anton Webern wrote choral music--and indeed, his complete output, performed here, lasts a total of five minutes and seven seconds. Two of the three pieces are rooted in Webern's familiar serial technique, but the scoring, for choir, violin, clarinet, bass clarinet, celesta, and guitar, is delightfully original. The instrumental works are given expert readings by some of this century's finest performers. --David Vernier

First of all. These Webern recordings are both technical and musical of the highest order.

There is a small error in the track listing on Amazon:

Is not Opus 6 but Opus 16.

Boulez's second round of Webern, this time for DG (his previous "complete edition" was on Sony) offers a generally excellent introduction to the composer, as well as being illuminating to those familiar not only with the composer but with Boulez's previous interpretation - the newer versions are in general somewhat slower, with contrasts less pronounced but the overall lines nevertheless clearer. The works on the disc at hand are hence elegant, graceful and often even alluring - even though, I hasten to add, Boulez has lost none of his incisiveness. Of course the Ensemble Intercomtemporain is as experienced with this music, and exhibits such exceptional control as well as understanding (I assume - even in places where I tend to feel a little lost) that I can hardly imagine any better accounts (even though there may be other, equally satisfying, approaches). They are, in short, excellent and deeply illuminating throughout - and the almost grotesquely late-romantic piano quintet, for instance, can hardly hope for a better recording than it gets here.

The slight drawback - and it is not really that slight - is the singing. Now, Christiane Oelze is a magnificent artist, and has a beautiful voice, but one does sense that it isn't quite expressive enough for the music; she seems to miss the power and range needed for the songs, being rather too thin-sounding and innocent (but then again, the kind of scary, alluring, expressive richness and crispness I am looking for might very well not exist). Hence, I don't think I can disqualify this disc on these grounds - and the ensemble work is marvelous - but I cannot avoid feeling slight hesitation about giving it a fully unconditional recommendation.
