大昔にＦＭで聴いたことがあったのですが、音色の面白さだけでやたらと長い退屈な曲という印象しかありませんでした。もちろんイギリスのロックバンドの名前の由来になったことや、当時シーンを席巻していたプログレに影響を与えた重要な作品であるということは知っていたのですが、いまいち馴染めなかった。
今回、あらためて聴き直してみると非常に刺激的な印象を受けました。「A Rainbow in Curved Air」は断片的にクラスターやセブンスウェイブのリフが思い浮かんできます。私にとって、それらが先だったので、あの当時は刺激に乏しいと感じたのかもしれません。
「Poppy Nogood and Phantom band」は、これまたソフトマシーンやタンジェリンドリームなどを連想させます。前半部の音飛びなどは、いろんな意味で刺激的で神経を逆なでしますね。
７０年代のロックを聴いてきた世代にとっては懐かしさすら漂うサウンドです。

本作はテリー・ライリーの初期代表作であり、彼のキャリアからみても代表作に入るといえます。
この曲は1969年の作品なのですが、一応ミニマル音楽であり、東南アジア（インド、バリなど）や中東の伝統音楽からかなり影響を受けているようだ。

特にロックアーティスト達にはかなりの影響を与えたようで、ポリスのスチュワート・コープランドやフリップ＆イーノなどはこの中の曲そのもののような演奏をしている（特にロバート・フリップのフリッパートロニクス）。

テリー・ライリーはその手法にジャズの即興演奏のようなやり方を採用しているので、本作も音楽の演奏に柔軟性があって非常に面白い。
それから、エキゾチックな雰囲気とかなりの高速で奏でられる演奏は、聴いていて高揚感が生じる。

そういうアルバムだからこそ、何時聞いても「なんてユニークで格好良いんだろう」という思いで聞いてしまう。

ライヒのようにクラシカルできっちりした音楽では無い代わりに、非常に躍動感に富む動的な音楽として、いまだにその存在感は際立っていると言えよう。

まだテリー・ライリーを聞いたことが無い人は、本作か『in C』をぜひとも聞いてみて欲しいと思います。

でも、簡単に言うと　コレってトリップ・ミュージックですよね。
キメて聞けば別世界へって感じの。
アッパーな１曲目とダウナーな２曲目って組み合わせも、モロにそれ系だし。

まぁとにかく聞いてると、とても気持ち良くなれる１枚です。

テリーライリーはミニマルとは違うよ

絶対違うと思うなぁ

じゃあなんだ、って言われるとこまるし、だからってどうだって言いたいわけじゃあないんだけど

ただ、ミニマルではないと思う

表題曲は、風の谷のナウシカの戦闘シーンが浮かんでくるんだけど、
こんな曲がどこかの場面でBGMで使われてませんでしたか？
確認はしてないので、完全な記憶の混乱かもしれませんが

そのせいもあるのか、一曲目は聴いていて暖かい風を感じながら、心地よい速さをもって飛んでる
ような気分

アッパーめのキラキラしたそれこそピンク色の空に虹がかかってるジャケットのような一曲目と、
ダウナーめのドローンな二曲目

順番が逆だと、体調によっては聴きにくいけど、この曲順だから、結構いつでも聴ける

昔からロックに影響を与えた「電子音楽」として、超有名な作品です。この人の作品は、一貫して、ポップで難しくなく、しかも多様な解釈を許す間口や奥行きの広さがあるので、今だに愛聴してます。ライヒやイーノ以前に既にこんな素敵な自然で温かみのある、おもちゃみたいな音楽を作っていたことは驚きです。本来アンビエントやニューエイジとかよりも、先に体験すべき音楽です。

表題曲はライリーのIn Cと並ぶ傑作です。エレクトリックオルガンの節が全面に
現れ、ライヒやグラスなどの生音で奏でるミニマルよりも人工的でプラスティッ
クな感じはモダンに聞こえます。にもかかわらず、リズムはアフリカ的なポリリ
ズムが全開でこれほどまでに、プリミティブなものとモダンなものが同居してい
る曲はそうざらにはないでしょう。

プログレファンはご存じかと思いますが、ポリスのドラマーのスチュアート・
コープランドがかつて在籍していたカーブド・エアというバンド名は当然この曲
名から取ってきたものです。

上記の曲だけなら５星ですが、Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Bandに関しては
ちょっと今ひとつという感じ（好みの問題だが）なので４星ですが、実際のとこ
ろは１曲目を聞くだけでも絶対的に価値があるので、この星には気にせず是非お
買い求めを。

Avevo già questo cd ma in versione masterizzata. Un viaggio nel paradiso allucinogeno della musica metafisica di Terry Riley che ho avuto anche la fortuna di vedere dal vivo! Tra i musicisti cosiddetti minimalisti è certamente uno dei miei preferiti insieme a Steve Reich e Philip Glass..

I've not heard these pieces for almost 50 years; the last hearings were, uh, chemically assisted and that may have enhanced them above reality.

But playing them today I can say that is untrue. Both are as fresh, original and innovative as they were back then.
In today's music environment, where minimalism is an established form, it's easy to forget just how far ahead of the curve was Terry Riley.
It's lovely to float into this marvellous and hypnotic sound-world again.

A Rainbow in Curved Air es el tercer álbum del pionero de la música experimental y del minimalismo clásico, Terry Riley. A través del uso de la técnica del 'overdubbing', el compositor, un virtuoso del teclado, toca todos los instrumentos en esta obra: órgano eléctrico, clavicordio eléctrico, dumbec y pandereta. El trabajo comienza con un simple 'zumbido' minimalista que evoluciona con extrema rápidez en emocionantes modulaciones de estridentes sonidos muy alejados del lento desarrollo de estructuras minimalistas habituales, como, por ejemplo, en la obra 'In C', del propio Riley. El resto de la pieza explora diversas texturas de teclado y percusión que se van superponiendo en capas. La naturaleza en gran parte de improvisación de la obra, en base a escalas modales, le debe mucho al jazz y la música clásica indostaní. Algunos músicos de jazz ya habían explorado antes técnicas de 'overdubbing' como, por ejemplo, Bill Evans, uno de los 'heroes del piano' de Riley.

I found my first exposure to the music of American minimalist composer Terry Riley (and minimalism as a genre), to be extremely rewarding. As a fan of 1970s progressive rock and electronica, I am a little surprised that I did not explore the genre sooner, given that there is so much overlap between audiences of progressive and minimalism...well, at least there was overlap back when both styles formed part of a "popular avant-garde". At any rate, this 1969 album is excellent and sounds (to my ears) as exciting and innovative now as I am certain it did upon its release.

Terry Riley plays quite an assortment of instruments on this album including electric organ, RMI electric harpsichord, rocksichord, dumbec (finger drum), and tambourine. The electric organ however, which is heavily treated at times, dominates the soundscape. There is also heavily electronically altered soprano saxophone in the mix too. Quite honestly, this is some of the strangest and most eerie saxophone playing I have ever heard - very long sustained tones, with only incremental changes.

The music on this album is characterized by a series of what musicologists refer to as "ostinato networks". These networks are comprised of layers of interlocking and repeated melodic patterns that gradually unfold over long periods of time (A Rainbow in Curved Air = 18'39"; Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band = 21'38") with only very subtle changes over the course of each piece. There is however, a subtle rhythmic element, which is nicely demonstrated on the first piece. Evidently, this is a tendency borrowed from American jazz styles.

In large part however, the music on this album is deeply meditative, and at times borders on the hypnotic. The droning organ does a great job of achieving this and reflects a structural aspect borrowed from eastern music, particularly Indian classical music. One interesting fact that I read during my fact-finding session on minimalism was that the sheer length of each piece and the meditative quality of the music deliberately tried to reproduce the sense of timelessness induced during an acid trip. The second piece is a good example of this and seemed to at least partially suspend time - I got very caught up in the meditative aspects of the music and (for once) was not aware of time.

This is fantastic stuff and I am well on my way to exploring other works by Terry Riley including his masterwork "In C", in addition to other minimalist composers such as Steve Reich, LaMonte Young, and Philip Glass. Very highly recommended to my fellow proggers.
