This opera is filled with such beautiful melodies that it's a wonder why it isn't performed as often as Puccini's other works. It is, however, fortunate that this remarkable recording is available, and what a recording it is! Kiri Te Kanawa and Placido Domingo are magnificent. Conductor Lorin Maazel gives this opera the justice it well deserves with the London Symphony Orchestra under his baton. The only drawback, if one considers it to be one, is that there are only a couple of tracks for the entire opera, so if the listener wanted to program a particular aria, it can't be done. Why the producers didn't consider that inconvenience is a puzzle. Nonetheless, this version is the cream of the crop and is well worth owning.

Wonderful voices, great conducting, excellent engineering - absolutely perfect! Except for the fact that CBS programmed no numbered reference points. The whole opera is done on three tracks - track 1 is Act1, track 2 is Act 2, track 3 is Act 3! Horrible for trying to follow the libretto - which is included.
Great performances of an under-rated oper(ett)a. A knock-off of La Traviata, I find the music more "real" and the story more touching. Instead of dying as in LT, the courtesan heroine must relinquish her fantasy of a happy life and resignedly returns to her old profession. The final note, a musical sigh, is breathtaking.
