The sound is atrocious and the piano is out of tune, yet this live trio recording from September 9, 1955, in Carmel, California, was a bestselling album. Garner brings a wealth of imagination to every performance of every song. On uptempo numbers like "I'll Remember April" and "Red Top" he hammers away with intense left-handed figures while unleashing relentless cascades of improvised lines with his right. On ballads like "Teach Me Tonight" and "April in Paris" he plays with the softest of touches, changing tempo from verse to verse for dramatic effect. His performance of "Autumn Leaves" is so over-the-top it could have gone to parody, but not in the hands of this master entertainer. His humming, grunting vocal accompaniment--he seems to be commenting on "They Can't Take That Away from Me" as he plays it--provides a kind of side show to the performance. More than 30 years later it's still starkly original work. --John Swenson

日本一のジャズ喫茶、一関の「ベイシー」オーナー、菅原正二と早大ジャズ研出身タモリ（敬称略）が雑誌の対談で取り上げたのがこのアルバム。タモリが「時々聴きたくなるんですよね」と語る名盤、実は私、聴いたことがないので、早速購入しました。ライナーノートで面白かったのは、ガーナーは左利きで、そのため左手は右手より速く動いて完璧に演奏できるが、右手はその速さに付いていけない、そのアンバランスな演奏に何とも言えない味がある、という指摘。なるほど、そう言われれば（笑）ニンマリしながら楽しめる名盤です。

最後のメンバー紹介の後のジョークは

You know something? You haven’t heard Erroll say one word, and he’s got a great voice. I want to insist it go on the air. Erroll, say one word.
ご存知ですか？エロールが話すのを聞いたことがないでしょう。彼はいい声の持ち主なんですよ。それを放送したいと思います。エロール、何か言ってください。

It’s worse than Louis Armstrong.
（しゃがれ声を真似て）ルイ・アームストロングよりひどいですよ。

と言っているんですね。やっと分かりました。コンサートの内容はまさにこのジョークのような、明るく楽しいジャズです。私はエロール・ガーナーを、真剣に「ミスティ」をスタジオでいつも弾いていたのかと勘違いしていました。

コンサートに行きたかった…。
一緒にスタンディングオベーションしたかった。
でも、この音源が聴ける私は幸せなのかもしれない。

エロールガーナーはジャズピアニストの中でも、
独特の弾き方をする人だと思います。
左手のリズミカルなバッキングが好きです。

独特というだけではなく、すごく美しい音色が聞こえてきて、
聴いていると感情が高ぶってきます。

ブルーノートには飽きちゃった。
ジャズには、いい音源ってそんなに無いのかな…。
そう思うようになった頃に、このピアニストの音源を聴いたとき、
私はジャズを聴いてきてよかったと感じました。

un disco strepitoso. Che non può mancare nella collezione di un amante del jazz pianistico e in generale della musica.
Era molto che ne sentivo parlare e finalmente l'ho comprato. Vale molto di più di quanto costa. Peccato che l'incisione live non sia delle migliori!

For several decades jazz critics have hailed “Concert by the Sea” as a masterpiece. And rightly so, but it doesn’t explain the album’s broad appeal. The answer? “Concert by the Sea” wasn’t really a jazz LP in the traditional sense. Instead, it was more of a smooth-jazz-pop crossover featuring pianist Erroll Garner’s lush, romantic treatments of American standards, such as “April in Paris,” “Autumn Leaves” and “Where or When.” Jazz fan or not, the album has broad appeal for anyone who gives it a listen. Interestingly, Garner was self-taught; he couldn’t read a lick of music. What he did have was an abundance of talent, and an ear for music that few possess. Garner’s approach was uniquely his own. According to jazz critic Marc Myers, he treated the piano like a guitar, “his left hand keeping time with strong rhythmic chords as his right hand ‘plucks’ away on the keys above. When his hands eventually unite, Garner releases waves of hair-raising block chords, resolving in a flashy finish” (Wall Street Journal, Sept 5-6, 2015). “Concert by the Sea” was a happy accident. Recorded live in a church in Carmel, California, in 1955, making an album was not part of the plan. Unbeknownst to Garner and his manager, a recording engineer for the Armed Forces Radio Network named Will Thornbury captured the performance on an Ampex mono reel-to-reel recorder with plans to air the concert later for soldiers who couldn’t attend. One thing led to another and one year later “Concert by the Sea” was released to the public on vinyl LP. Sales were slow at first, but picked up big, reaching a half-million units sold by 1961. Garner is ably backed by Eddie Calhoun on bass, and Denzil Best on drums. You want joyous musical perfection? This is it. Five stars.

Berühmte und fantastische Konzert-CD. Typisch Errol Garner, wie er immer leicht gegen den Takt spielt - sein Markenzeichen. Auf der CD sind noch einige Stücke enthalten, die es nicht auf der Platte gab. Ich habe diese CD im Bordprogramm auf einem Langstreckenflug gehört, und mich sofort in die Musik verliebt, so dass ich sie nach der Rückkehr geordert habe. Eine CD, die ich öfter als viele andere höre - für Jazzfans halt.

El sonido es digitalizado de las cintas originales analogicas de la grabacion en directo, con una calidad buena y donde se puede oir al publico entusiasmado con la actuacion del trio.
Como detalle y que tambien lo explica el libreto incluido en el CD, Erroll Garner nunca aprendio a leer musica, era un fenomeno natural con una gran espontaneidad.
Sin duda uno de los albums basicos en cualquier discoteca de jazz.
