添付資料によれば、Gould’s conducting debut and final recording.

It's an important recording being that it was the first of many recordings with Gould conducting.
His sudden death, only months after the recording's completion, ended that project. It's also one of the very first all digital recordings.

Unique Idyll
Like Shakespeare's 1609 sonnets the original “Tribschen Idyll” is an intimate work. Richard Wagner composed the Idyll as a Christmas and birthday gift, and to celebrate his marriage, to Cosima (Liszt) von Bulow. Cosima left husband/conductor Hans in 1866. Divorce enabled her remarriage to RW in August 1870.
Wagner originally wrote the "Tribschen Idyll" for a chamber ensemble (13-15 players). Having prepared and rehearsed the work in secret with local musicians, RW assembled his tiny orchestra on the Tribschen stairway and awakened Cosima with its private debut on Christmas morning 1870. Chronically is search of cash Wagner later rewrote the piece for full orchestra, publication and sale, renaming it the "Siegfried Idyll" that we generally hear today.
The typical modern brisk reading and heavy orchestration today hides much. I heard recordings and attended concerts of more than a dozen Idyll renditions, all with a full orchestra, before ever hearing this truly revelatory Glen Gould chamber ("Tribschen") version. Gould chose highly eccentric tempi throughout his career. His various “Goldberg Variations” ranged from blinding NASCAR speeds to koala bear kabuki dances. You get the latter with this Idyll recording. It will remake this piece for your ears and imagination.
Long, tender, touching recordings (23+ minutes) exist with huge orchestras led by Maazel and Celibidache. The lush sonics of those large ensembles can opaque some of the sounds and impacts that Gould reveals with his raw instrumentation, languid tempi and micromanaged dynamics. Gould's dry acoustic is not always warm. Consciously or not, Wagner's melancholy harmonies and melodic turns are edgy, even disturbing, under the baton and studio control dials of Maestro Gould. Conflagration, death and transfiguration never Wander far from the very audible fire music, the forest bird, the forest murmurs and the turgid arousal of the love duet between Siegfried and Brunhilde that are all packed into this unique chamber version of the Idyll.
Gould's solo piano transcription of the Idyll is nearly as long as his orchestral version. It is the last 3 minutes or so that Gould stretches into a 4 or 5 minutes -- transformative magic as his percussion instrument turns already languid string notes into a breathtaking, soft, ethereal finish.

Good News & Bad News

Bad news is; Glenn Gould's debut recording as conductor is this painfully slow performce of Siegfried Idyll. It starts in sleep inducing tempo and slowly builds up to cacophony of every instrument claiming its supremacy. Basically he does what he does with Bach's music with piano, articulating every voice of the score. Unfortunately it doesn't work with the 13 instruments. The effect is like many people talking loud all at once in a confined room. It sounds rahter like one movement from Mahler Symphony. Gould certainly could have made interesting career as conductor, possibly a great Mahler interpreter, if he didn't die in less than a month after this recording which is 24'29 of musical torture!
Good news is; 46'30 of the disc includes most impressive recordings in the entire GG Editions. His own incredible transcription of Meistersinger Prelude is mesmerizingly complex and at times sounds like tonality is melting (last 3 minutes of it includes 2nd piano part added later, though). Gould's piano transcription of Götterdämmerung and Siegfried Idyll is a feat of most exquisite piano playing ever committed on record.

Interesting for what it is

Somewhat of a curiosity - Gould and Wagner. His conducted performance with a very small orchestra is revealing - you hear all the voices and lines very clearly. The piano transcriptions suffer from a recorded sound more suited to Bach than Wagner.
A recording for completists, but not one I'll listen to a lot.

Bone dry genius....maddeningly frustrating.

Glenn Gould (1932-1982) was a true one-of-a-kind talent. But, as many of his fans know, he could often be maddeningly frustrating in his musical approaches. This cd is a perfect example of that. Here, Gould plays transcriptions of the opera music of Richard Wagner, namely from Gotterdammerung and Die Meistersinger, as well as two versions of the Siegfried Idyll. I have never been one for piano transcriptions of orchestral music (even by Liszt), as it waters down considerably the original work. Kind of like taking a full color painting and reducing it to a bare-bones pencil sketch. And Wagner just doesn't quite work on the piano. All of the lush harmonies and orchestral textures that make Wagner Wagner are gone when reduced to just a single set of 88 keys. Plus GG takes such SLOW tempi, namely in the two versions of the Idyll. The first one is the conducting debut (on record) of Gould, and was his penultimate recording in 1982. Not much happens in this version, the original 13 instrument chamber arrangement, since it's so transparent in texture. You need at least some rhythm in a piece like this or else you begin to border on bad ambient music. But GG always had his reasons, so I give him that. I kind of liken it to how Marlon Brando would just chew up scenery by mumbling in a movie in the way only he could, just emoting by doing pretty much nothing. You knew there was genius there, but you didn't know where the hell it was! And GG, often called the Marlon Brando of the piano, does just that here. Bone dry genius, when the original was full-fledged technicolor glory. For die-hard Glenn Gould fans only.-------------PEACE
