Amazonレビュー
In the history of recorded blues and spirituals, there is no greater singer and songwriter than Blind Willie Johnson. With a vocal delivery ranging from raw rage to tenderness wedded to his talking guitar, Blind Willie's recordings are as powerful today as when he made them, from 1927 to 1930. Listen to monuments "Motherless Children Have a Hard Time," "I Just Can't Keep from Crying," "It's Nobody's Fault but Mine," and the otherworldly "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground," and try to find equally visceral conviction any other place or time. His "If I Had My Way I'd Tear The Building Down" which got him arrested when Blind Willie unknowingly sang it in front of a U.S. government building in Dallas, became a '60s icon. Years later, he caught pneumonia, but when treatment was sought, he was told the hospital did not treat blind people, so he returned home and died. --Alan Greenberg

And so is the "Paris Texas" soundtrack. Thank you Ry! It seems to just get better w/ age...a desert island recording here.
I would recommend both, together!
The material catalogues well the tragic circumstances of Blind Willie's time and life. The great depression, Spanish influenza epidemic and the sinking of the Titanic, also the suffering he had to personally endure. These cuts originally on the Columbia label date from 1929 and are a testimonial to the man's faith in God through tribulation and personal calamity.
Great value as I purchased some Blind Willie CD's back in the 90's from Tower records and they were very expensive but worth every penny to myself to experience these cuts.
Amazing slide guitar techniques that many pop musians have been influenced with. Music that is fermented in the soul of this tragic personality that may sound harsh to those who are unfamiliar with his style and too quickly dismissed before being examined properly.
The sound quality may also put many off as they are primitive recordings but of great historical significance and should be in a guitar players index for pertinent reference.
Excellent accompanying booklet that gives all pertinent information on the recordings and a brief history of his life.
These recordings were made by Columbia Records during several recording sessions between December 1927 and April 1930. The sound is quite acceptable for recordings of that era.
Blind Willie Johnson's guitar playing is first rate. His vocals are distinctive and expressive. His compositions are excellent, in both music and lyrics. Most of Johnson's lyrics are strongly religious, which may not appeal to many modern listeners in these far more secular times, but any blues fan who dismisses or ignores Blind Willie Johnson's music because of its religious content is making a huge mistake. Gospel and religious themes played a large part in the development of this music and Blind Willie Johnson's song writing is very high quality. His vocal and guitar prowess are readily apparent when you listen to these recordings.
Some of this music will be familiar even if you've never heard of Blind Willie Johnson. Eric Clapton covered Mother's Children Have A Hard Time his 461 Ocean Boulevard album in 1974; Dave van Ronk also covered that song on his Inside Dave Van Ronk album in 1962. Clapton also covered Jesus Is Coming Soon on his There's One In Every Crowd album. John the Revelator has been covered several times over the years by different artists, as has Its Nobody's Fault But Mine, which was covered by Led Zeppelin, among others.
Other Blind Willie Johnson lyrics or song titles have been referenced by other well known musicians. As one example, there's a Led Zeppelin song which uses the line "Jesus make up my dying bed." That's the title of a song on this collection.
Listen to Blind Willie Johnson's guitar playing and you'll hear many licks used by today's blues guitar players.
In short, Blind Willie Johnson was a major blues talent who should be far better known than he is today. If you're a blues fan, this is a recording and an artist you should pay some attention to.
This Complete Blind Willie Johnson collection is the recording to buy if you want to check out this great bluesman. The sound is good for music from 1927-30 and there's a very good booklet which gives a good biography of Blind Willie Johnson, some explanations of his music and the recording sessions and concisely explains Blind Willie Johnson's place in blues history.
"Motherless Children Have a Hard Time", "I Just Can't Keep from Crying", "It's Nobody's Fault but Mine", "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground" o "If I Had My Way I'd Tear The Building Down" son algunos de los grandes clásicos que nos dejó para el recuerdo, y que fueron retomados una y otra vez por generaciones de artistas posteriores.
