The first two songs on this New York college sophomore's debut album are the best, layering happy funk on the sampled foundations of the Doors' "Soul Kitchen" and Donovan's "Sunshine Superman." Coppola, a chanter, rapper, and singer from Long Island, New York, affixes a cow picture to her album sleeve, poses in kinky hair like Coolio, names the album for a Spanish phrase meaning "goat sucker," and creates catchy melodies to complement all this playfulness. "I'm a Tree" is a summer single worthy of the Jackson 5's "ABC" or Hanson's "MMMBop," and Coppola's DJ complexity occasionally aspires to the level of Beck or M.C. 900 Ft. Jesus. --Steve Knopper

一曲目のI'm Treeからして実に明るくて流ちょうなラップと
ノリの良いサウンドでウキウキしますね。
ジャケットの変な髪形は一曲の「私は木」から来ているでしょう。
2曲目はドノバンのサンシャインスーパーマンをサンプリングしてますが、
知らない人からするとイマイチかも。
3曲目はクールなカンジで、4曲目の It's all about me は最高にノリがいいです。
5曲目は地味ですが、6曲目がまた気持のよい曲で、ここまで楽しめれば
元は取れると思います。ヒットしなかったのは残念ですね。

This is easily ones of my favorite albums that I own. This is a great albums full of quirky, funny and sometime abstractly introspective lyrics, and catchy upbeat tunes. You will notice that most of the songs are kind of formula-matic, but I seriously doubt that will bother you, since Imani's personality shines throughout. While I'm at it, I just want to make it clear that she has a new cd that is out called Afrodite. Get it to her how she has matured over the years. Support the cause. Stay up on the news.

For me, Chupacabra answers the question, what if Laurie Anderson had grown up with Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Shuggie Otis as brothers? Which is to say, it's a quirky mix of styles and influences that doesn't always work, but as often as not manages to gell into something that's both fresh and fun.

Coppola came to my attention because of her recent Little Jackie project  The Stoop , which I'm also enjoying immensely. While Chupacabra falls more on the hip hop than the soul side of the equation, I suspect that most fans of Coppola's later work (solo or as part of Little Jackie) will find something to enjoy here. The songs are sparser and simpler, with more focus on rapping and, yes, even violin on a few tracks. On some tracks this becomes repetitive, but Coppola does vary her sonic palette over the course of the album. Some listeners may also appreciate that she uses relatively little profanity here--probably because the songs are more about mellow grooves or wry observations than bragaddocio and posturing.

With the exception of a few tracks, this is a solid album. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys quirky, experimental music in general, and especially hip hop that's more original than what you'll hear on top 40 radio.

I first heard this album about 15 years ago - my god, has it really been that long? Love the funky grooves, her happy, pretty voice & presentation, and interesting lyrics. Had to really hunt to find this after all this time, but I'm glad I did!
