Amazon
Nothing can match the greatness of Howard Jones' haircut, which displayed a peculiar early-'80s combo of mop-top and spikes that was so simply wrong it could hardly have been mistaken for anything else. His first (and best) album doesn't have the monolithic sterility of his biggest hits ("Things Can Only Get Better"--the woah-woah-woah song--and "No One Is to Blame," which featured Phil Collins). It's also got some of Jones' catchiest numbers, including the charmingly simple "New Song" and "What s Love." It's all of an era, of course, but let it herein be noted that Jones was singing "I don't want to be hip and cool/I don't want to play by the rules" (from "New Song") well before Nirvana and Beck turned such sentiments into a "revolution." --Keven McAlester

Primarily this album, recorded mostly in 1983 is very much a part of the first wave of synthesized new wave music. This is not an album of loud guitars or flamboyance. Some of the chords are a bit cold sounding. But on tracks such as the beautifully textured "What Is Love" he is shown to have the capacity for well constructed melodic phrases. The type that could earn someone hits. And on that he got one. You can hear with the horn fanfare, falsetto vocal interludes the Motownish beat to "Pearl In The Shell" that he has a strong affinity for soul music as well. Goes with the program with new wave I suppose. But he really does understand the form of it quite well. The "other" hit here is the Caribbean inspired dance/soul number of "New Song" with great lyrics about balancing life priorities better with a great hook. The almost jazzy ballad "Don't Always Look At The Rain" again makes the best use of poetry and Howard's bohemian outlook. The songs heavier on the non conformist lyrics are the colder rigid electronic new wave type cuts with more classical influences such as "Conditioning","Hide And Seek,"Equality","Natural" and in particular the title song where he speaks directly of bisexuality and personal freeom by declaring "Sometimes I'd like to go to bed with a hundred women or men" and so forth.
It's topped with a fairly obvious Asian type melody the dramatic, piano textured closing intrumental "China Dance" is an excellent way to end this album. Howard Jones in fact never achieved the sort of career and musical longevity that he very much deserved. Especially since his concept of anti corporate/committee thinking would later becoming the rallying cry of the alternative/grunge rock and hip-hop set. You'd think these artists and critics would've appreciated Jones self concept a bit more than they did. But to a big degree they didn't. But among artists of his day he was respected. A famous appearance playing a "synthesizer medley" with Dolby,Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder that included a melodic refrain of his hit "What Is Love?" should say something. Howard Jones kind of did get the short end of the stick in many ways. But for those who followed his brief but potent body of work in the mid 1980's there was a lot of respect, appreciated and be entertained with by this artist.
