Long before releasing this, his debut solo album, Falkner had established his pop credentials as guitarist with briefly fashionable San Francisco-based ironists Jellyfish. He brought a similar musical sensibility to Author Unknown--a roughly even balance of 1980s American New Wave and 1960s British pop--but dispensed with the spangled flares and silly hats. This modesty is at once this record's greatest strength and greatest weakness. There is nothing wrong with Author Unknown, as such--Falkner is a capable singer and a proficient songsmith, and the better moments, like "I Go Astray" and "She Goes To Bed" evoke fond recollections of the first Smithereens album. Unfortunately, too much of the rest of the record errs on the side of earnestness--a little of the gaudy exuberance of Jellyfish's "The King Is Half Undressed", for example, would not have gone astray. --Andrew Mueller
