With its somewhat grandiose title, the legendary Otis Redding's fifth album maintained much of the same formula that had been used on his previous recordings for the Stax subsidiary label Volt, combining some fine Redding-penned originals with the stylized vocalist's interpretations of others' material. While Redding always lent his own special raw, gospel-edged stamp to everything from the Beatles' perky "Day Tripper" to a slowed-down, unparalleled reading of the pop standard "Tennessee Waltz," it was on his own songs--such gems as "Fa- Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)" (his 15th R&B hit single), the plaintive "Ton of Joy," and the bluesy "Hawg for You"--that Redding was at his soulful best. That said, nothing quite compares to how he turned another pop classic, "Try a Little Tenderness" into an emotive opus that became a showstopper wherever he appeared during his tragically short-lived four years as a hit-making recording artist. As an example of the horn-driven Memphis sound, Dictionary of Soul is an excellent reference, and Redding is in peak form as a true American original, whether he's giving '50s hit man Chuck Willis's "You're Still My Baby" a workover or breezing through his own almost-joyful "She Put the Hurt on Me." For the benefit of those with limited "knowledge" of Redding's specialized vocal vocabulary, the original album included some sidesplitting definitions of terms such as "gotta-gotta" ("not able to do without it") and "ou" ("ouchless excitement"), and they are reproduced in full on this reissue of what is easily one of Redding's finest recordings. --David Nathan

モダンなオーティス

サム＆デイヴの一連のヒットを手掛けていたデヴィッド・ポーター＆アイザック・ヘイズが初めてオーティスのプロデュースを担当した作品集。
なので、ちょっと他のアルバムとは雰囲気が違います。よりモダンになったと言うか。
例えば、このアルバム随一の傑作バラード「My Lover's Player」など、南部特有の土臭さが消え、より都会的な感じです。
ビートルズの「Day Tripper」も、「Satisfaction」と比べると、より洗練されたアレンジです。
もっとも、オーティスの歌い方そのものは変わらないので、ちょっとよそ行きのジャケットを着てみました、見たいな感じでしょうか。
それにしても、「Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa」の歌声は、どうでしょう。副題に（Sad Song）と付いてるだけあって、悲しみが歌を通してビンビン伝わってきます。他の歌手ではこうはいきません。
このアルバムで一番有名なのは「Try A Little Tenderness」ですね。たった4分弱の曲なのに、これほどドラマチックな展開を見せる曲が他にあるでしょうか。もっとも、この曲が有名になったのは『Live In Europe』のヴァージョンからですが、このスタジオ版も充分素晴らしいです。
最近出た『Otis Blue』のデラックス盤は音が非常に良かったので、こちらもデラックス盤とは言わないまでも、新しいリマスターで聴いて見たいものです。

タイトルはジミヘンが言っています。ビートルズのDay Tripper は恐らく原曲はたいして聞いていません、ビートルズがいなかったとしてもオーティスは存在していました。影響を与えたほうです。アルバムにはないけど、ストーンズのSatisfactionは、ミック曰く、こっち（Otis）の方がいいと、今のストーンズはOtisのSatisfactionを歌っています。ロッド・スチュワートもブッカーＴ＆MG'sとAtlantic crossingを出して念願を果たし、大きな影響を受けています。このアルバムのTry a Little tenderness　はジャンルを超えて、多くのミュージシャンに影響を与えています。すべての曲が、ソウルとは何かを、練り上げたややこしい音楽より、肉声で訴える心の叫び、音楽の本質を体験できると思います。是非、聞いて欲しい１枚です。

20年くらい前に中古で初めて買ったオーティスのLPがこれでした。

ジャケがかなりカワイかったので、、、。

もちろん内容も文句なし！

代表曲や名カバーがバランスよく入っていて初心者の方にもお奨めできます。なにせタイトルが「ソウル辞典」ですから！

三十ん年前にラジオから流れてきた＜I can't turn you loose >のLIVE(wisky a go go)を聞いてノックアウトされ、以来otisは私の最も好きなsoul singerです。このアルバムはオリジナル曲、カバー曲ともotisのアレンジの素晴らしさに感服です。この時わずか25歳とは..。
私はvolt 原盤のLPを（中学３年の時に貯金全部使って2000円で手に入れた）持っていますが一生の宝物です。otis のbest盤を聞いて好きになった方はこれをまず聞いてみて下さい。取っ付き悪いかも知れませんが聞けば聞く程に好きになるでしょう。

《ソウル辞典》は、意味不明で(Sad Song)でもあるらしいFa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Faで始まる。コンサートの冒頭にはまず持ってこないような呑気な曲だ。つづくI'm Sick Y'allもミディアム・テンポだが、タイコがタイトだ。そしてグルーヴが増してくる。いい曲だ。同じようなことは、You're Still My Babyにも言えるかもしれない。ソウル版Tennessee Waltzは、換骨奪胎が激しいものの、スライ＆ザ・ファミリー・ストーンのQue Sera, Seraに匹敵する非常に丁寧なカヴァーだ。そして代表作Try a Little Tendernessがやってくる。しかし、ここでのヴァージョンは意外にも凡庸で、せっかく曲が熱く盛り上がってきた所でフェイド・アウト。Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Faともどもライヴによってアレンジが変えられて行き代表作に成長していったのだろう。一方、Day Tripperは、前作でのSatisfactionと同じマナーで臨み見事な成果を上げている。Hawg for Youはオリジナルのブルースで、ブッカー・T&MGズの見事な演奏もあって実に印象深い。総じて、停滞とは言わないまでも、思い切ったタイトルの割には低調気味のアルバムではあるが、そこかしこに胚胎している未来を感じることができる。

I've been collecting Otis Redding's albums over the past year or so. I'm increasingly worried that the CDs will go out of print eventually. I started off with Otis Blue, followed by Sings Soul Ballads. Then I reluctantly bought Pain in My Heart and King & Queen, although they turned out to be completely worth it. I was delaying purchasing the record I knew I wanted the most, Dictionary of Soul. The album only intermittently appeared in stock as a product sold and shipped by Amazon (I'm skeptical of other sellers), and usually the price was more than I was willing to pay, there being so few copies available. After a long drought, a copy appeared, and I grabbed it up, despite the cost. It is without a doubt the greatest of his albums, and I think a fitting final solo record. Now, I have waited and watched, and I've finally gotten my hands on a copy of the Soul Album. It will complete the catalog, but I know it will pale in comparison to Dictionary of Soul. Definitely worth the money.

Einfach ein traumhaftes Album.
Als riesiger Stones Fan bin ich über die "Satisfaction" Version von Otis und die Oberwahnsinnsnummer "Try a little tenderness" drauf gestoßen und hab es seither nicht bereut.

Eine Must-Have Lp in jeder Sammlung.

Bien sûr, il vaut mieux découvrir Otis Redding par un Best Of, car il a enregistré une impressionnante série de succès, dans le rock comme dans la ballade. Mais si on devient un fan, il devient tentant de se procurer les albums originaux, qui révèlent bien sûr des trésors oubliés. Parmi ces albums originaux parus de son vivant (entre 1964 et 1967, malheureusement...), deux sont parfaits: "Otis Blue" et "Dictionary Of Soul". Ce dernier a ma petite préférence, même si ses titres sont peut-être un peu moins connus que ceux de "Otis Blue". "Dictionary Of Soul" est plus soul encore, et alterne idéalement les chansons rythmées, sensuelles et groovy, aux ballades renversantes. Toute la variété des styles d'Otis est présente sur ce disque original. Et "You're Still My Baby" est ma chanson préférée parmi tout ce qu'a enregistré Otis. Et c'est par "Try A Little Tenderness" que je l'ai découvert, un soir, à la télévision.
Le seul point faible de ce disque est sa pochette, originale elle aussi!
