Freedom of Choice is the third album by new wave musicians Devo, released in 1980 on LP. The album was co-produced by Robert Margouleff, famous for his synthesizer work in Tonto's Expanding Head Band and with Stevie Wonder. It contains Devo's most well-known song, "Whip It."
Amazon
While it was never determined whether those plastic things on their heads were flowerpots or collapsible drinking cups, the high-concept-minded Akron, Ohio, crew known as Devo had attracted mostly just the artsy new-wave crowd until this 1980 album brought them mass appeal. Way ahead of the video curve (they'd been making promo films since 1975), this band led by singer Mark Mothersbaugh and bassist Jerry Casale scored a huge hit with the jagged-rhythmed "Whip It," thanks in large part to a typically tongue-in-cheek video that MTV and dance clubs jumped on. The album also featured such cracked winners as "Girl U Want," "That's Pep," and the ever-caustic title track. --Billy Altman

Critics and fans will almost unanimously agree that the band Devo did their best work in four albums produced 1978 to 1981, and then their most recent album in 2010 was also very good. This album is the third that they made in 78-81, and is an important album in their discography.
**The themes of the lyrics and sound style**
Devo's music was affiliated with the synth pop movement of the 1980's, but their sound was more unique and distinct than the rest of the synth pop. Their vocals were crazy fast, science fiction/dystopian themed, and they had a wacky blend of synthesizer, guitar, and drums. Their music generally has this fast, crisp, and disciplined nature to it that makes it really awesome.
This album definitely captures those characteristics. Devo's song "Whip It" that they are probably best known for is on this album, but "Girl U Want," "Snowball," "Ton o' Love," "Gates of Steel," and "Freedom of choice" are also notable.
Several themes are covered in this music. Romance and love are a part of "Snowball," "Ton o' Love," and "Girl U Want." Devo's "Devolution" theme concept and the over control of our society are covered in Freedom of Choice and maybe Gates of Steel, which I find to be pretty cryptic. "Whip It" seems to have sexual connotation, though the band denies this. It can also be interpreted to just be a motivational, take charge of your life sort of song. Gates of Steel can be interpreted like this too, though it is quite non-sensical.
***Buying recommendation***
If you want to explore Devo, make sure you focus on their first four albums, where this one is the third one, or their newest album, Something for Everybody. Stay away from the others, they are just compilations and albums that were mostly failures. This is definitely one of their strongest albums. If you like 1980s music and synth pop, you will probably like this album. If you like music that contains passionate, clear vocals, you will also probably like this album.
