But any post-Dan suspicions that it was Donald Fagen who carried more weight in shaping the duo's stealth- pop are brilliantly atomized by this superb, if underrated, 1994 solo debut for Becker, which confirms his stand- alone gifts for intricate jazz harmonies, his instincts for superb arrangements, and above all his powers as a lyricist. スティーリーダンが好きな人はドナルドフェイゲン＝スティーリーダンと思いがちですが・・・
（実際、ガウチョでＳＤの活動を停止した後に発売されたナイトフライが大成功した流れがあるので当然と言えます）
私もそう思っていました
でも間違っていました
ナイトフライは確かにいいです・・・でも何かが足りない！キレイすぎるというか・・・
ＳＤ特有の「毒」みたいものが欠けてるんです
その「毒」は何だったのか？
その答えがこのアルバムにあります！
聴いて納得、マニアックなファンは必聴です〜！
ボーナストラックつきの日本盤が廃盤なのが残念です・・・

才能のある人は，自分の歌唱力のなさをソングライティングとアレンジでカバーできる．Dave Stewartしかり… この人もそう．Steely Danにおいて，彼のプレゼンスも重要なことは言うまでもないことだろうけど，本作はSteely Danとは別のアルバムとして考えたい．AORというには味のありすぎる詞の曲が勢揃いしている．なごみ系の"Little Kawai"のメロディと詞のミスマッチ(というか，組合わせの妙)に，ニヤニヤしてしまう．"Junkie girl"，"Surf and/or die"あたりの前半の曲の流れもサイコーです．"Everything must go"で，Steely Dan作品ではじめてのヴォーカル収録を行った彼のあの声が気に入ったなら，是非これも聴いてほしい．

曲を聴いたり，ジャケットを見たりすると，ロス暴動('92年)とか，本作が出た頃前後の出来事が思い出される．そういった事から感じられることを，独特のシニカルな視点で切り取って作品に昇華させてみせる彼の才能に，今さらながらうなってしまう．その才能は，確実にSteely Danの作品のベースとなっている．

このアルバムを聴いた時の印象はジャッキー・レビンが70年代にジョンセント・フィールド名義で出したCONTROLだ。
相棒のドナルドのソロに比べ地味な印象だがそれがかえってこのアルバムの普遍性を物語っている。音のストイックなまでの抜き方は計算づくなのか、それとも予算の関係なのかわからないがこの音数で正解である。ウォルターも抑揚のない唄い方（表情がないという意味ではない）にもピッタりハマっている。
スティリーダンが苦手という人にこそ聴いて欲しいアルバムである。

フェイゲンのKamakiriadの翌年に出た姉妹盤。全曲ベッカーが歌っている。下手である。曲の出来も大してよくない。(6)かフェイゲンのホーンアレンジで救われてる程度。ソロアルバムだからギターバリバリに弾いているのかといえばそうでもない。例によってシャキーンとした音で、だらーんとレイドバックなロックンロールしてみましたという感じ。
なのにどういうわけか、スティーリー・ダン関連ではガウチョの次くらいに良く聴いている。個人的にツボにハマっただけなのだろうが。

　このCDがリリースしてから３年後くらい経ったある夏の日に、岩手県水沢市のあるCD店に入ったら、このCDが洋盤コーナーに８枚くらいディスプレイされていて驚いた記憶がある。水沢で売れていたのか、単に店長の好みだったのかもしれないが、それ以来忘れられたCDだったが、ェブリシングマストゴーの中のベッカーのボーカル曲が非常に好きで、このアルバムと共通性のある曲だということに改めて気づき、ハマッてしまった。リリース時に買った印象は、同じような曲が並んでいるという感じだったが、よい曲なら同じような曲が並んでいても不満はないなと感じた。無機質な雰囲気はあるが、素朴なボーカルと上品なサウンドのバランスが面白く、ベッカーの音世界が構築されている。ダンのライブではベッカーが歌うと客がトイレに行ってしまうと揶揄されていたが、もっと多くの人に良さが認められてほしい。

・・歌下手だね。　歌わなければいいのに。
「ジョン・スクワイア」（元StoneRosesのギタリスト）と声色が似ていて、気持ち悪い下手クソさ加減も同じだ。
「アンディ・サマーズ 」入れて歌ヘタ3大ギタリストだ。
聴いていて本当に気持ち悪い＞歌はね。　ギターはよろしいですよ、そりゃ。

von 1994 ist eines dieser seltenen, echten Meisterwerke die von vielen oft übersehen werden, eben weil sie so unauffällig, schlicht und einfach gestrickt daher kommt. Also eine Platte, die nichts an sich hat, was für eine größere Aufmerksamkeit bzw. breiteres Interesse in der Öffentlichkeit sorgen würde. Kann mir denken, das daß bis heute so geblieben ist. Ich bin mir sicher, das sogar Steely Dan Fans eher The Nightfly von Donald Fagen (neben Walter Becker die andere Hälfte von eben Steely Dan) kennen und zuhause im Plattenschrank haben als 11 Tracks of Whack.
Kritiker der Platte bezeichnen die Aufnahmen auf 11 Tracks of Whack als bessere Demo-Aufnahmen, die Stücke darauf seien zu schlicht und karg inszeniert. Dazu noch Walter Beckers zynische, nölende, zappaeske(!) "Stimme". Und erst die Texte! Genau!! Die "Kritiker" haben alle recht!! Genau das macht diese Platte zu dem was sie ist, ein vor genialen Texten triefendes, musikalisch auf den Punkt gebrachtes Kleinod, wie man es nur selten in der Musikwelt antrifft. Walter Becker sei dank! Ich habe erst vor kurzem erfahren, das auf der Japan Edition dieses Albums noch ein Bonus Stück namens "Medical Science" mit draufgepackt wurde. Nachdem ich mir dieses Stück auf Youtube angehört hatte, habe ich beschlossen, ein mehrfaches an Kohle auszugeben, um mir zusätzlich noch eben diese Japan Edition anzuschaffen. "Medical Science" ist fast noch genialer als die anderen Stücke auf 11 Tracks Of Whack, und ich kann jedem interessierten oder bereits Besitzer der "normalen" Edition nur empfehlen, sich die Japan Edition zu kaufen, auch wenn sie nicht einfach zu bekommen und recht teuer ist, es lohnt sich! Es soll übrigens insgesamt sieben oder acht Outtakes von 11 Tracks Of Whack geben, gesammelt angeblich auf einem Bootleg namens "Just another Story". Ich habe dieses Bootleg bisher noch nirgendwo auftreiben können, Ihr vielleicht?

Well can I say its another belter from masters of wonderful crafted musicians Becker and Donald Fagen even though this is beckers solo album fagen is in there helping out his buddy I had been looking for this album since I heard it at a friends house pity its not available on vinyl so come on Walter do all your fans a favour and reissue it on LP each track has its on identity and never sounds similar to the previous track any fan of Steely Dan's work and Fagens solo albums really need to hear Becker's solo work, his voice is really distinctive like Fagen's and his choice of material can be described as slightly darker maybe ? But even still its good to hear the contrast between the two men who have become a cult icon with their quality writing and contructions of their songs and the wry look on life they both have as far is I'm concerned these two masters of music can do no wrong so check this album out but make sure you not play it around young kids as the song junkie girl does have some swearing in it

Some of the other reviews write that they didn't much like the album at first. I confess that was the case with me.... and like them, found myself returning again and again to the Becker well. I'm now head over heels in love with this music and the grown up messages that actually fit my generation. My current favorite is Hat Too Flat. Couldn't tell you why but it summons a feeling that's deeply familiar.

Walter, if you read these reviews (can't imagine why), please keep making music... it's precious to many of us and will endure for generations, through the bubble gum, mindless electronic textures and retro smarm. Please?

Die CD wurde im zeitlich angegebenen Rahmen geliefert und ist in Ordnung. Leider war das Case kaputt aber dafür ist es gebrauchte Ware.
