Pop careerists might be excused for regarding The Blue Nile, the Scottish pop trio helmed by singer and songwriter Paul Buchanan, as suicidal: In a business where timing is all, the Nile have managed to squeeze out just three albums in 15 years, supported by only two major concert tours. Why, then, should we care about their music? The answer lies in their deeply emotional, often epic albums, which have made them darlings among a cult as noteworthy for its high-profile peer membership as for its evanescence. Buchanan is a brilliant writer and singer who can channel Sinatra's elegant aloofness and Al Green's ecstatic whisper while remaining staunchly rooted in his Scottish identity, and his songs trade in the mundane details of daily life while reaching for epic scale in their emotional settings. スコットランドの至宝、The Blue Nile。 1996年リリースの3rd。

それまでよりも生楽器中心のアコースティックな音作りが目立つ内容で、前作『Hats』が夜のイメージならこちらは朝。一日の始まりを祝福するようなゴスペル・コーラスが感動的な(1)や、軽やかなアコースティック・ギターのストロークに導かれてはじまる(2)が、これまでの彼らにはあまり感じられなかった開放的な印象を聴くものに与えます。

もちろん一聴しただけでそれと分かる、彼ら独特の音に対する美意識は不変。本作でも、研ぎすまされた少ない音数のアンサンブルを絶妙な空間処理で聴かせます。このへんは、The Blue Nileにおけるジョージ・マーティン的存在、ストレート・アヘッドなジャズからダンス・ミュージックまで手がける幅広い音楽的引き出しを持ったエンジニア、カラム・マルコムの貢献が非常に大きいといえます。

2012年のポール・ブキャナンのソロも秀逸でしたが、4thアルバムの『High』からすでに11年。さて、5枚目が出るのはいつになることやら。

　『Hats』から7年後、1996年発表の3作目。ブルー・ナイルの基本的な “世界” は不変ながら、シンセを巧みに使ったオーケストレーションによる静謐さや浮遊感、幻想感がやや影を潜め、アコースティック・ギターやピアノなどの生音を大きくフィーチャーし、タイトなドラムが屋台骨を支えているのが特徴です。

　そのせいか、他の3枚より語られる機会の少ないアルバムですが、クオリティーは文句なし。サウンドはより瑞々しく輪郭が明確になり、歌詞はよりパーソナルに、ポール・ブキャナン氏の “うた” が前面に出る形で切なく優しく響き渡り、彼らの楽曲の良さを再認識できます。特に、ゴスペル・コーラスが感動的で歌詞の一節がアルバム・タイトルに引用された冒頭の「Happiness」、アコギの小気味いいカッティングが印象的なアップ・ナンバー「Tomorrow Morning」などは、本作を象徴する新境地といっていいでしょう。

　国内盤の解説や上記の商品説明には、三人組から「二人（組）になった」と書いていますが、スリーブにはオリジナル・メンバー三人の名が明記されています。なお、国内盤にはボーナス・トラックとして、シングル「Happiness」のカップリング曲「O Lolita」が収録されています。

　“夜”が圧倒的に似合うブルー・ナイルの音楽ですが、本作はアコースティックなサウンドのせいか、やわらかな木漏れ日や、雲間から差し込む一筋の光を感じさせてくれ、個人的には朝や夕方などにも聴きたくなります。いずれにせよ、長く愛聴に耐え得る好盤です。

超寡作なユニット・ブルーナイルによる3作目(96年作)

そもそも、1stが出たのが83年、2ndが89年、つまり13年間でたった3枚しか出さなかった。(ちなみにこの次のアルバムも出ているが、それは2004年発表です、ひえー)

しかし、このバンドのすごいところは、長い時間の経過など全く関係ないとでも言わんばかりに、真摯に普遍的で良い音楽を紡ぎ続けているところだ。特にこの3rdアルバムは、完全に時代性を超えたソング･クラシックのような地点に辿りついたといえるだろう。以前のアルバムは、多少ニューウェイヴぽさを感じたり、シンセの平板な音が80年代らしくあったが、ここではシンセを抑え気味にし、よりアコースティックで生っぽい感じに仕上げてあることが、一つの完成形を向かえた要因だろう。

このアルバムの良い点は、とにかく伸びやかで生き生きしているところだ。とてつもなく広い原っぱで、思い切り深呼吸をしたときのような清々しさがある。ポール･ブキャナンの声は、どこまでも響き渡っていくような感じで開放感があり、緩やかで雄大な楽曲に生命力を与えている。

ベストトラックはM7。ピアノの弾き語りに、壮大なオーケストラが被ってくる大変美しい曲だ。ここでのブキャナンは、搾り出すように一言一言丁寧に言葉を発しているのが、とても感動的で、伝わってくるものがある。戦争や犯罪など悪いニュースばかり流れる昨今、人間は本来、優しいものなんじゃないかと思い直させてくれる素敵な曲だと思う。

生涯何回このアルバムを何回聴くとことになるであろうか・・・。ブルーナイルの処女作『a　ｗａｌｋ　across　the　rooftops』が発売されたのが１９８４年、その後『hats』というアルバムを出し、現在この３ｒｄアルバムにあたる。やわらかいピアノソロが心を落ち着かせる、それでいてこの胸に込み上げてくる熱い思いはなんであろうか？それは長い年月を隔てても彼らの音楽性が変わらないところにあるのだろう。古き良き時代の詩人が今、平和の終わりを唱える・・・。

I am really into Blue Nile now, and this is just a FABULOUS CD! It's sounds awesome in my Ibuds--man all the chords and instruments are just so vibrant listening through them. I could literally listen to the Cd all day long--the music is catchy, happy, and peaceful. This is becoming my favorite Blue Nile CD, after Hats. I highly recommend it. Happiness, with the choir, just is so encouraging and positive. I bought the Deluxe CD so there's about 16 songs on it--get that one. This kind of music isn't made anymore, sadly. Thank you Phil Collins, for the recommendation!! We need more of Phil Collins and Blue Nile. I'm thankful to be a child of the 80s when music was at its best.

Por supuesto, elegancia y buen gusto, como viene siendo habitual en todos los trabajos del grupo britanico.A destacar los temas SENTIMENTAL MAN y GOD SAVE YOU KID,en la linea de sus obras anteriores. Esta quiza es la menos electronica y mas acustica. Recomenabilisimo.

You know the cliche: 'If I could give this more than five stars...' Well, in this case it's never been more true.
If (and this is only my taste and opinion, naturally) their debut was a magnificent 'grower' that now sounds like the start of something unique, Hats was a sublime classic that anyone with a heart and mind must surely love, and the most recent (from 2004) High was a gravely beautiful goodbye - then Peace at Last (from 1996) was and is sheer unadulterated bliss, a set of ten songs so ridiculously and unerringly lovely as to defy belief.
Their first two albums were flecked with keyboards and thwacking eighties drums, while this has far more guitar, and the difference is to its credit. The mostly strummed guitar gives the songs a warm, almost festive sound, while never compromising their trademark spare solemnity - though they sound much happier here than on High.
I can't and won't pick favourites, since I have none. This is one album to sit back and swallow whole, letting its gorgeousness overwhelm you. (Am I exaggerating? Not much, no.)
The Blue Nile were always an 'occasional' band, but the four records they made together contain some of the loveliest, most uncategorisable music by any British band of any era. They took their time and the results were - to quote the old song - too marvellous for words. I think their music reached an ethereal, ecstatic peak in this their third record.
And fancy being able to follow up Hats with anything this good!
I love everything about Peace at Last, from Paul Buchanan - he of the mercurially soulful voice - on a blurry-maned horse, to the choir singing of Happiness on the opening track.

{NB. I have reviewed the original single-disc edition, which is all I need - besides, I get the impression that the Deluxe remaster isn't sonically trustworthy, which can all too often be the case.}
