I first got into =w= at the beginning of last year, starting with TBA and working my way up to Raditude. While I greatly enjoyed their first few albums, by Raditude there was a taste in my mouth longing for more of the "good old days." In many respects, "Renturn of The Rentals" is that fufilment.
In my opinion, "Return..." is like Pinkerton, PT. 2 (yes, I realize that this album preceded Pinkerton by one year). Only, gone are the insecure lyrics and vocals of Mr. Cuomo, which are instead replaced by =w= bassist Matt Sharp and what feels like his rendition of the quirkiness experienced on TBA. Synthesizers are present, similar sounding to those on Weezer B-Sides "I Just Through Out The Love of My Dreams" and "You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" (whew). Songs like "Waiting" and "Brilliant Boy" pack in enough raw energy and fun to rival anything on TBA or Pinkerton. "Friends of P." and "My Summer Girl" are nice little synth-pop gem sing-alongs that may not really go anywhere lyrically but are fun as hell to listen to. "Sweetness and Tenderness" finishes the album out on a soft note, violins included. This album IMO is quintisential synth-pop, and should not be skipped. A diamond in the rough, "RotR" ranks right up with the best of Weezer, and frankly, any other great rock band of the 90's.
A great album following Matt Sharp's departure from Weezer. In this album you can really hear the talent that Sharp has harnessed. Weezer's song writing has suffered ever since Sharp has left, and in listening to this album,he has not lost a step with his songwriting. If you liked Weezer's first two albums, try this out and then wonder what could have been.
