Buddy Guy was an essential link between chitin' circuit bluesmen of the '50s and early '60s and the blues revivalists who translated their music for rock audiences in the late '60s and early '70s. Guy's recording career began in 1957 and he backed such legends as Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon, yet his delirious attack made immediate sense to blues newcomers. This 10-song collection highlights his work for Chess from 1960 through 1964. Guy is in his prime as a player and singer, and the sterling supporting cast includes longtime partner Junior Wells, Otis Spann, and Fred Below. --Steve Stolder

First Time I Met The Bluesの雄叫びとギターのびびり。My Time After A Whileのイントロの鳥肌とせつなさ。

An Excellent 1970 Buddy Guy Album On Chess Records
This is an excellent Buddy Guy album released on Chess Records in 1970.
There are some classic Chicago blues tracks on this one and it's a worthwhile purchase for any blues fan.
At the time of writing, the price on this CD was under $5. At that price, grab it while you can.

One of Buddy's Best Albums
This is probably one of Buddy Guy's top three albums. It's on the Chess label so it is early Buddy Guy and not the later rock sound of Buddy Guy. This is straight Chicago blues, not rock and roll. A lot of these songs appear on the Chess collection of Buddy Guy's greatest hits but it is really worth owning the album. In my opinion, the album is a lost art today. Many bands make two good songs and fill the rest of the album with filler. There is no concern on how a current album hangs together. This album is a work of art as an album. What I mean is that you have to take the whole album as a work of art. This album is full of great songs and hangs together beautifully. If albums were rated as works of art this album (and the time in which it was made) would be comprable to Picasso's Blue Period. This is Buddy Guy's Blue or as it were Blues period and is an amazing work of art.

I WAS WALKING THROUGH THE WOODS is good early treatment of Buddy Guy as recorded by Chess ...

I WAS WALKING THROUGH THE WOODS is good early treatment of Buddy Guy as recorded by Chess Records in early 1960's. What makes this album worth while is Buddy Guy's vocals (and guitar play, of course.) The only reason this is not a 5 star recording is the fact the background horn section, and the harmonica play (from Junior Wells), is too quiet. It would be my semi educated guess that these instrumentals were recorded in a separate room with one mic and, hence, the distant, quiet sound. It is very clear though - but again just too quiet.
But, do not let me dismiss just how good the front man sounds, especially those breath-y, ailing Buddy Guy vocals. I would go so far as to say this was his best singing stage. And, again, his blues guitar is better than sufficient and effectively volatile when the time comes to make his jamming or angst-ridden point.
The first three songs cover 17 minutes and really get Walking Through the Woods started as a 5 star record. I mean really good. The last 7 songs cover about 19 minutes and the distant instrument sounds (to me) get more noticeable. Again, this could be because the start was just so good.
Still, overall, this is more than just a pleasant piece of blues, music history; and I just listened to Junior Wells' 3 harmonica additions, again, to be sure I heard him. After all, It is still quite cool that Junior Wells is an 'added' plus to this Walk Through the Woods from 1960's, Chess Records collection.
Good and bluesy.
And for whatever reason, could just be me, I find it interesting these 10 songs were not pieced together until 1970! for a Buddy Guy release. The latest of these songs was recorded in '64! It took awhile but Chess knew they were on to something and someone special.
The rest, as they say...
