Recorded in the U.K. in 1980 when Ely was opening for The Clash, Live Shots is a frenzied shot of live rock & roll, west Texas style, with the fierce electric and pedal-(steel)-to-the-metal guitars of band members Jesse Taylor and Lloyd Maines. Although not as accomplished a live set as his later Live at Liberty Lunch, Live Shots remains the best document of Ely's rock-out phase; a driving, relentless cover of "Not Fade Away" particularly stands out. The quieter ballads are what'll bring you back, though, especially moving versions of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's "Treat Me Like A Saturday Night" and Ely's own "Honky Tonk Masquerade." --David Cantwell

I just love Joe Ely's live performances, this is not the best recording though.

If you want to hear Joe and the band really smoke buy "Live @ Antone's" the band are on fire! and it"s a really great recording,
the crowd are clearly having as good a time as the Joe and the boys. As shouted from the floor after Up on a Ridge "we love you Joe". Available at Amazon.

This was my introduction to Joe Ely back in 1981. I'd read a review of Live Shots in Rolling Stone magazine which commented very favorably on the album and included an observation that it featured traditional country music instruments such as accordian and pedal steel guitar. I bought it without hearing a cut, figuring it was worth the punt. It sure was. Believe the other 5 star reviews, this is a ripping record and one of my all-time top 10.

I took it home, dropped the needle and was greeted with Reese Wynans' boogieing piano and 'Fingernails' opening line, "I keep my fingernails long so they click when I play the piano..." Joe's crack road band roars into life and one of the great live albums is off and rockin'.

I must have left the room at some point on side one, but then I heard something that made me go back to the stereo and start 'Long Snake Moan' all over. It was Lloyd Maines' steel guitar, played like I'd never heard it: overdriven and wailing, Duane Allman meets Buddy Emmons! His playing on that and several other cuts is not trad country, but it soars! Jesse Taylor on lead guitar takes great solos also and the guitar and steel harmony lines on 'Johnny's Blues' are electrifying.

The songs are great, the playing inspired and the live energy is palpable. I have most of Joe's releases, and there is not a dud among them, but this was my first experience of his music and it still sounds as dynamically fresh and vibrant as it did all those years ago.

If you like seriously rootsy, rocking country music, you will not be disappointed with 'Live Shots'.

"I keep my Fingernails long so they click when I play the piano".
Frage: Was macht ein Texas Cowboy in England? Antwort: Eine wahrlich elektrisierende Live-CD aufnehmen!
"Live Shots" wurde 1980 während einer England-Tournee mit den Clash (!) mitgeschnitten. Und diese Zusammenarbeit tat Ely hörbar gut! Denn die CD zeigt Ely 'at his best', angefangen beim Opener "Fingernails" über Hank Williams "Honky Tonkin'" und "I Had My Hopes Up High" bis zum grandiosen "Long Snake Moan" (J.L.Lewis läßt grüßen) und Buddy Hollys' "Not Fade Away".
Should I Stay Or Should I Go"!

5つ星のうち5.0 Alt Country At It's Best Live

Although I never got to see Joe live or the Clash for that matter, it must've been an interesting pairing. I first saw Joe on the Austin City Limits back in the "Musta Notta Gotta Lotta" days, and became somewhat countryfied from there on. I never expected that could happen, being a rather hard rocker. Joe is a rocker's country boy that seems to always be surrounded by great musicians that can both rock out and tex mex or country it. He can even throw in the blues, and plenty of honky tonk for good measure. So if you're getting the idea that he's rather hard to classify, that's certainly true. That all being said, he rocks out on this one while staying true to the country. I'm surprised it worked with the Clash, but on this recording it seemed to. If you like Joe, give this one a nod, it is a complement to his other live recordings ("Live at Liberty Lunch", and "Live @ Antone's"). If you're dabbling in alt country, this is very good listen, give it a try. Above all, he's got a great voice, the band is rockin', and this is a good recording for a live show.

This live album flat out rocks. Recording is great. Energy is through the roof. Great songs which span multiple genres, smoking solos, great vocals. My favorite Ely live by far.
