4曲目『Living Your Pockets』。

A timeless set of songs crafted with journeyman precision …

I've come late to the Ocean Colour Scene party but after seeing them headline Weyfest this summer I'm now a committed convert. Having not previously been familiar with OCS, somehow they and much of the late '90s and early noughties passed me by, ahead of the fest' I broke one of my cardinal rules and bought their best of package "Songs For The Front Row" as a crammer, but now I'm back for more and have purchased not just their breakthrough album "Moseley Shoals" but also its successor "Marchin Already".
"Moseley Shoals" opens with the unforgettable riff of the sublime OCS Britpop hit "The Riverboat Song", what more can I say? The first of the singles from the album it's followed in quick succession by two more: the Beatlesesque "The Day We Caught the Train", with its punchy rhythmic vocal delivery and big choruses it wouldn't have been out of place on the "White Album"; and then choppy and catchy "The Circle", both of course are excellent and Wiki tells me that they actually out-performed "The Riverboat Song" in the singles chart. So while that's three out of three so far you have to question the wisdom, or perhaps the self-belief, of any band that front-loads its second album with three hits. But whether it's wisdom or self-belief thee rest of "Moseley Shoals" isn't to be found wanting because while eight of the remaining nine tracks may not be as familiar they do pass the fab-or-filler test even if [spoiler alert] they don't all perhaps adhere to a strict Britpop template.
Fourth track "Lining Your Pockets" is different, it's slower and reflective with a sixties British folk-pop sound that gradually builds to a crescendo as Simon Fowler's demonstrates the magnificence of his vocals. "Fleeting Mind" that follows is another that has a sixties British folk-pop sound but with sharp jagged guitar work from Steve Craddock whose playing throughout the album is just phenomenal. Listening to the opening bars of "40 Past Midnight" I can't help think of the Rolling Stones' "Let's Spend the Night Together", helped by Fowler channelling his inner Jagger. But while there are similarities there is a complexity to OCS's sound that's all their own, and it's at this point that I realise that that's where the strengths of this album lie. It's not the just songwriting or the playing that makes these songs so very good, that's not to say that the songwriting isn't good, it is, and so is the playing from all four musicians, but it's in the arrangements and the production by Bernard Lynch and OCS where their strength lies; they've really thrown in the bells and whistles, although perhaps not real bells and whistles, and that's what makes these songs work; they're collages of carefully arranged small fragments of sound that have been pasted together but not in a throw-in-the-kitchen-sink-and-make-everything-louder-than everything-else way, these songs been crafted with journeyman precision and it's an absolute joy to listen to them in my headphones.
Despite the emotionally draining lyrics of next up "One for the Road" at its core it's a fun infectious dance number. However "It's My Shadow" that follows is perhaps, for me at least, the lowest point of the album, it's not that there's anything actually wrong with this nice reflective slice of Britpop but in the company of the other great songs here nice and reflective is all it is. "Policemen & Pirates" that follows is a more upbeat toe-tapping number with Oscar Harrison's solid drumming driving it along, I've no idea what it's actually about but IMO it's so good it could have been a single. "The Downstream" is a fabulous slow bluesy ballad, another that's in late sixties Stones territory with Simon Fowler again channelling his Jagger, leaving the singles aside this is probably my favourite track, although the knob-twiddling with which it ends is an unnecessary indulgence.
Penultimate track "You've Got It Bad" was another single, and is a great Britpop song before the nearly eight minutes of closing track "Get Away", the longest track here. It's another that could have come from the "White Album" as band mixes bucolic folk with a bit of blues before getting lost in a spell of extended what-does-that-knob-do twiddling but all the while remembering that they're a guitar-led rock band, it's at least as good a way to close the difficult second album as "Champagne Supernova" and that's saying something [and if anything here is close to mentor Paul Weller's solo sound then it's probably this track].
And that's it. With its distinctive sound and heartfelt lyrics "Mosely Shoals" is a genuine timeless classic and was worth every one of the admittedly relatively few pennies I spent on my second-hand disc.
