Ray Charles is the Genius of Soul, but he's always had a bit of country boy in him, too. Between playing hillbilly piano when he was a kid and landing several duets on the country charts in the '80s, Charles released this 1962 classic, taking 12 country standards and proving that great songs can remain great, no matter what the setting. Behind blaring brass and thrilling strings, Brother Ray transforms "Hey, Good Lookin'" and "Bye Bye Love" into big-band swing; "You Win Again" into the Nashville Sound; and "I Love You So Much It Hurts" into the most elegant of pop. レイチャールズといえば、「ハレルヤ・アイ・ラヴ・ハー・ソー」や「ホワッド・アイ・セイ」などのＲ＆Ｂを代表するようなイメージが強いが、一方でカントリーミュージックも盛んに吹き込んでいる。本作はそれを代表する１枚である。ブラックミュージックファンは敬遠しがちな部分であるが、聴いているうちにそこにソウルを感じることができるのがレイの素晴らしいところ。食わず嫌いせずに1度聞いてみてください。

Ho preso i due volumi dei "Modern sound in country & western music" in una edizione economica della Not Now Records, sicuramente non il massimo per i cosiddetti collezionisti. Ma ho fatto bene, nel senso che ho fatto bene a non spendere troppo per questi due album.
Ho sempre nutrito profondo rispetto per il "primo" Ray Charles, quello che sapeva combinare con gusto pop music, folk soul e r'n'b. Se leggete la sua autobiografia scoprirete che ha sempre tenuto d'occhio le classifiche e che il suo obiettivo era dare alla gente quello che la gente voleva.
Ma ha fatto l'imprenditore con gusto il Signor Charles e ha dispensato bella musica per molto tempo.
Ripeto, a mio avviso soprattutto nella prima fase della sua carriera, quella con la Atlantic e con la Abc Records.
Questi suoi due album appartengono alla fase d'oro, i primi anni 60... sono entrambi del 1962.
Ma per me la cosa non funziona, ma proprio non funziona. C'è una tale enfasi negli arrangiamenti di questi classici della tradizione country americana che spesso innervosisce. Non discuto l'idea di rivedere in chiave soul e r'n'b la tradizione country, non discuto neppure quella patina pop e orchestrale che pervade questa operazione. E' stato fatto da altri e ancora oggi c'è chi si diverte a giocare con la tradizione (e purtroppo spesso i risultati sono deprecabili)...io discuto il buon gusto, quel giocare con umori enfatici, ridondanti, magniloquenti che a mio avviso quasi sempre rovinano la naturalezza di questi brani.
E' bene precisare che io nutro profondo amore per la tradizione country e folk americana e anche se può sembrare supponente, la mia discografia relativa a questo genere credo mi autorizzi a dire la mia.
Che poi "la mia" sia condivisibile o meno, beh questo è un altro ragionamento.
Ray Charles ha fatto un sacco di musica meravigliosa, volendo c'è l'imbarazzo della scelta su dove cominciare a conoscere questo grande artista. Ma a mio avviso non da questi due album. Ma proprio no....

Had this as an LP as a gift from my sister when I was just a kid and of course I lost it as well as other memories after years of moves and changes in life. Had to have it again to add back to my collection - this man was true genius
