Essential Iron Butterfly
The name "Iron Butterfly" immediately invokes thoughts of strength and agility. This is what you'll find in this collection of songs, gleaned mostly from the band's albums "Metamorphosis," "Heavy," and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida."
Iron Butterfly's music was written mostly during the "flower power" era of the late 1960's (when America was deep into the space race and our boys were fighting in Vietnam) which is reflected in many of the songs here. A few may have been "suggested" by an LSD- and/or alcohol-induced session as well, which was the case with several bands during this time. Whether or not this is true, the fact remains that the music presented here is a good representation of the times, a theme which Iron Butterfly exploited. Sadly, the band would be quickly forgotten soon after its breakup in 1971, yet rediscovered in the late 1970's when they once again began to tour, much to the delight of "Butterfly" fans everywhere.
The CD opens with the "Iron Butterfly Theme," an instrumental that sets the stage for what is to come. Hint: if you listen closely at the end of the track, you will hear the phrase "I Love You" played by Doug Ingle on the organ in Morse Code.
It is true that only the three-minute radio-edit version of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is included in this CD. If the producers had decided to add the long version, either the set would have been made into a double-CD (which was not the trend at the time) or many of the songs now on the CD would have been sacrificed. Instead, a "mini" retrospective of Iron Butterfly's other works are to be found here, including the non-album single, "I Can't Help But Deceive You, Little Girl."
For the new fan just discovering and exploring Iron Butterfly, "Light and Heavy: The Best of Iron Butterfly" provides a good cross-section of the band's work and is a good first CD, especially for listeners who enjoy psychadelic heavy-metal, and is a fair retrospective for those who have been fans of the "Butterfly" for years.

The title HEAVY AND LIGHT is appropriate. Iron Butterfly is known for it's heavy sound, but it also had a light side. Sometimes both sides show up in the same song. The songs are light, mostly about love, and have pretty melodies. Background vocal harmonies, on certain songs, remind me of some "pop" bands of the sixties. The lead vocals, keyboards and especially the guitar, bring the heavy side. Lead singer and keyboard player, Doug Ingle, said they wanted a name they could live up to. They wanted to be good, which meant being "heavy, tight and together" both musically and as people. It also meant being "light, dynamic, versatile and original" or in other words, "heavy and pretty".
I've been a fan of Iron Butterfly since the 60s, and have a few of their albums on vinyl. This collection has all my favorites, except "Are You Happy". The long version of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is also missing from this collection. That's understandable, considering it took up a whole album side, but as one reviewer has previously stated, their first four studio albums would have fit on a two disc set. There are a total of 32 tracks on the first four original albums. This cd includes 21 tracks. They may wanted to keep something to attract buyers to the other albums.
The single version of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", with a running time of 2:53, seems to end before gets going good. It was made almost useless, by it's guts being edited out for play on top 40 radio. The extended instrumental and drum solo are what made the 17 minute album version so great.
My favorite tracks are "You Can't Win", "Flowers and Beads", "In The Time of Their Lives" and "Soul Experience", but there are many good and lesser known tracks.
Five of the ten tracks from the first Iron Butterfly album Heavy are included in this collection. From the six tracks on In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida only "Are You Happy" and the long version of the title song, are missing. From Ball , seven of the nine track are included, plus a non-album single. From the album Metamorphosis four of the nine tracks are included.
This is a nice collection for those who don't want to buy all the Iron Butterfly albums. The audio quality is excellent, and the production puts the stereo separation to good use. The cd also includes a ten page booklet with some history of the band, as well as information on who plays on each track.
