While looking for a copy of the song "I'M BLUE (The Gong Song)" by The Ikettes, a whole new musical genre opened up for me--that being, 50's to 60's Rhythm & Blues. By the 60's I was mainly into Acid/Folk Rock. I liked the Motown sound a lot, particularly the "Girl Bands" as well as individual African-American singers. I've always liked traditional folk & early blues. The 60's era of music/cultural fusion went by pretty fast, and it wasn't until this new "Retro" journey that I've started to learn what R&B was about.
On the back of this HELLO STRANGER CD Barbara Lewis writes: "This collection will stand up more than the other packages that have been done before."
I know I really like it.
Barbara Lewis wrote the first 5 songs in the collection. Could anybody sing "Hello Stranger" better? I don't think so. "Puppy Love" and "Think A Little Sugar" are dynamite. Later on Lewis sings "Baby I'm Yours" by Van McCoy which is, of course, a R&B classic. Again, it's hard to imagine anyone else delivering the song so well--and it was a huge hit.
In fact, All the songs are great, very up-beat, wonderful backup by The Dells & excellent remastering. Lewis voice is very smooth, very much a unique artistic style.
Listening to this CD you can hear how Barbara Lewis & her music influenced the newly emerging styles of the 60's. This is feel good music you can dance or enjoy working (like on a computer) to.

Barbara Lewis was a talented singer with a voice as smooth as caramel. She had a small handful of hits in The States, and could, and should, have gone on to much greater fame and fortune than she did. Perhaps her inherent shyness made her marketability difficult. And somehow she kind-of drifted away into virtual anonymity during the latter half of the Sixties. If you are unfamiliar with her work, then this compiliation will amply demonstrate what you have been missing. There's hardly a bad track here. Her hits (both big and small) still sound cool and soulful. And even most of her lesser recordings have something there that will want you to listen to them more than once. Good sleeve notes and detailed recording statistics, help to make this a very good buy, and it will be an enhancement to any collection of quality 1960's pop music.
i didn't know how much i loved barbara lewis until i heard "hello stranger" one day while listening to Pandora - i then created a barbara lewis station and heard "baby i'm yours" - that song reminded me of a time when i was little girl watching my mother and father (both deceased) dancing in the middle of the floor - yeah, good times - i love this one the best - thanks
