Classic Monkees!

Their first album once they bought themselves into independence, a great look at what kinds of music they actually wanted to produce. As such, it's still classic Monkees all the way!

The Monkees' 3rd No.1,multi-platinum album in a row in 1967! "And,We Gotta Be Free!!!"

I first got The Monkees "Headquarters" back in 1968 when I was 12.Well, I'm 62 now and now I got it on CD and I appreciate it even more. It went to No. 1 on The Billboard Charts in June 1967 and went multi-platinum. This was the first album to reach No.1 without a single being released from the album. Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork said "Headquarters" was their personal favorite Monkee album. They fired their record producer Don Kirshner; (he said in an interview that it was the only time he ever got fired.) They got to play their own instruments like they wanted to on their first two albums but they wouldn't let them , using studio musicians instead. Chip Douglas of "The Turtles" produced the album and played occasional Bass and he also wrote "Forget That Girl" which Davy Jones sings lead vocal on. The group created a "garage band" sound. The Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" knocked "Headquarters" out of The No. 1 spot in the summer of 1967. Also known as "The Summer of Love."
Davy sings lead on "Shades of Grey", a great song by future Rock&Roll Hall of Fame members, the husband and wife writing team, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Davy sings lead on Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart's "I Can't Get Her Off My Mind", and on the mellow "Early Morning Blues and Greens." Davy plays the percussion on the songs.
Mike Nesmith wrote and sings lead on "You Told Me", You Just May Be The One" and "Sunny Girlfriend"; his foray into Country-Rock. He co-wrote "No Time" and plays lead guitar, rhythm, pedal steel guitar and the organ on the songs. Micky sings lead vocals on Tommy Boyce &Bobby Hart's "I'll Spend My Life With You" and "Mr. Webster" co-wrote and sings lead on "No Time." He wrote and sings lead on "Randy Scouse Git" and plays the drums on the songs. Then, there's the funny monkeying around on "Band 6" and "ZILCH".
Peter's contribution is singing the other lead vocal on "Shades of Grey" ,playing keyboards, guitar, bass and banjo and his best effort, "For Pete's Sake" which he co-wrote with Micky singing lead vocal,(which they decided to use as the closing theme on their television series.) With the lyrics," We were born to love one another. This is something we all need. And, what we gotta be..... is.... free. We gotta be free! We gotta be free!

The Best It Can Be

I disagree with the assessment, comparing the Monkees' tracks to the Beatles' Capitol Remasters series. The Beatles' Capitol Remasters aren't as harsh, in my opinion. Although I'm a huge Monkees fan, I think it's fair to judge the Beatles as having been in a league all their own. I don't think many would argue that their studio, producer, engineers, etc. at their disposal were the best in the world. The L.A. session pros the Monkees used weren't anything to poke fun at, but when it comes down to it - it's comparing apples and oranges. American producers and session players are some of the best in the land, but the Fab Four with Sir George Martin at the helm happened to steal the show when it came to product. My point is the Monkees' Remasters don't sound anything whatsoever like the Beatles' Capitol Remasters. I've bought all of these Monkees' Deluxe additions and have A/B'd them. Rhino undeniably does an awesome job with their remastering and repackaging product; however, it was the method and skill that both of these groups' recordings yielded that dictate what can be done sonically with remastering these tracks years later. One can only do so much in the restoration process, despite available outstanding software that can repair damage, as is done in the restoration of classic films. Like a photograph, if there are limitations in the audio recording source, then there will certainly be limitations in the remastered product that are overtly present, no matter how good the remastering process was delivered. In other words, the remastering may be excellent to the point of noticeable difference in restoration of itself, but the process and quality of the original recording will be the deciding factor in what dinstinguishes brilliance and superiority in one particular artist's work from roughness and disproportion in another's. Still, I thoroughly enjoy these pop treasures for what they are. They have stood the test of time, and Rhino always does a superb job in restoring that from which it often has a challenging and restricted preference to work.
