My boyfriend has literally 20 or more Robyn Hitchcock CDs, and this made an awesome present for him. He got into Robyn in the late 90's, and he says he had only seen videos of Robyn from current times, until now. He said it was really cool to see footage of Robyn from the 80's, and that there was a great song selection. I thought so too, there were a lot of great songs, and the videos were artistic, abstract, energetic. "Only the Stones Remain" was an especially good surprise to find on the track list, we both liked that one especially.

This DVD is very much a product of its time, with an "arty" late-1980's aesthetic that looks far less clever today than it might have looked 20 years ago, and the limitations of the video technology of the day are palpable. As a performance document of Robyn's songs, "Storefront Hitchcock" is far superior. But it's a real pleasure to be able to *see* Robyn with the Egyptians, in particular the interplay between Hitchcock's guitar and Andy Metcalfe's bass work. I only wish that they'd used more "straight" concert footage and less arty animations and cut-aways.
If you're not already a Hitchcock fan, you'd be well advised to buy "Storefront Hitchcock" first. It better captures the essence of Robyn's wonderful songwriting and unique performing style. But if you're a fan of Robyn and the Egyptians' 1980's neo-psychedelia, you should probably grab this DVD while it's still in print.
Thanks to the reviewer before me for giving me an idea what to expect from this DVD. Unlike him, I did not have a copy of the CD so I am very pleased with my purchase. The music is brilliant. The visuals, as expected, are cheesy, amateurish and psychotic in an endearing sort of way. (The video to "Surgery" for example is just a close up of Robyn's mouth singing through the entire song). Though the individual song videos lack high production values they are quite bizzare and leer at the audience sarcastically in true Robyn Hitchcock form. The live footage of the band is great to have. Just seeing Robyn and the Egyptians perform classics like "Heaven", "My Wife and My Dead Wife" and "Kingdom of Love" make the DVD preferable to a CD in my opinion. In short, I loved it. My wife hated it. My dead wife was unavailable for comment.
