This soundtrack was originally released on vinyl in 1983 on Animal Records (Blondie's guitarist Chris Stein's label) to accompany which was the first and best Hip Hop movie ever made, the movie itself depicted everything the culture was about during the mid late 70's.
Before Hip Hop was officially recorded DJ's like Grandmaster Flash looped or mixed an obscure Funk track on their turntables for the MC's to rap over, B-Boys were breakdancing to these beats and the graffiti artists created art by spray painting the trains which ran along the New York Subway, the music on this soundtrack just like the movie captures that essence in full effect, six out of the 17 tracks were recorded live either at The Dixie (a nightclub in The Bronx) or at The Amphitheatre at New York's East River Park.
Featured on this reissue are the original breaks used as backing music for the MC's to rap over, the main one was the Fab 5 Freddy produced "Down By Law" which was used on five of the live performed songs which makes it sound a little repetitive at times but each different performer gives their own spin to it, also on this reissue you have five unreleased tracks plus the "Wild Style Theme Rap 1" and "Wild Style Subway Rap 2" (the latter is a sequel to "South Bronx Subway Rap") both performed by Grandmaster Caz (Casanova Fly) from The Cold Crush Brothers and Chris Stein, both these tracks are not featured on the U.K. reissue.
You also got excellent live performances from The Cold Crush Brothers, The Fantastic Freaks, Busy Bee, Double Trouble, Rammellzee And Shockdell to name but a few, overall if you want to hear what real Hip Hop was all about I highly recommend this to anyone due to the fact that this soundtrack and the movie epitomised what Hip Hop culture was all about before it became commercially overblown by the not so good Hip Hop that is out there filling our airwaves today.
