With the ambitious and fervent Return of the Frog Queen, the former Sunny Day Real Estate frontman plays everything from guitar and drums to harpsichord. Then he surrounds himself with a strings, woodwinds, and brass. Lyrically, he's elliptic; musically, he strays from the pretty pop to a kind of sober psychedelia. Ultimately, he clearly feels the need to make a grand statement. Of course, grandeur is often delusional, and big, as often as not, is merely bloated in its infancy. With this undeniably enchanting album, however, one can't help but wonder what's next for Enigk. And that in itself is impressive. He's upped the ante enough that we can anxiously anticipate his failures as well as his achievements. --Steven Stolder

世の中ではエモコア（こういった呼び方は嫌いなんだけど）の代表格、
個人的には個性的で、少しひねくれた泣きのメロディーを作ることに掛けては
ダントツに才能を感じさせるバンド、SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATEの中心人物であるジェレミーのソロ作。
バンドでの、スケールの大きい迫力のギターサウンドはここでは感じられないものの、
このアルバムを聴くと、「ああ、バンドの中心はやはり彼なんだな」と納得してしまうメロディーの美しさ。
心の奥の、閉まって置きたい、できれば忘れてしまいたい過去の傷跡。
そっと無理なくそれを浮かび上がらせる曲の痛さ。
聴きながら
アイタタタタタタタ・・・・・・・・。
でも、どうにも止められない”ハマる”音楽です。
というか、僕が自分の痛い所をグリグリしたくなる性質（たち）。
ジャケットもシンプルで品がよくていい。
優しい音楽ではないですが、温もりの中に残酷さを秘めた、人間らしい音楽なのかも。

This album is, I think, the first solo release from Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk, and while it doesn't sound much like Diary or How It Feels, it's still a terrific album that builds up to the sort of frantic energy that Enigk can get across better than anyone, and has the same mysterious sort of language found in SDRE. Fusing whimsical orchestral arrangements with characteristic Jeremy Enigk darkness, this is an album that is overall a fun listen that frequently bursts into moments of incredible potency and emotion. Definitely something to check out. The only downside is that I wish it were longer.

One of my favorite things in the universe is John Lennon circa 1965-1967. Sounds like Mr. Engigk likes that too. My heart still breaks every time I remember that John Lennon was cut down before his time. Listening to this helps. Whether it's intentional or not, he really does have a Lennon-esque lilt in his vocal stylings now. (Though his Kurdt Kobain impression makes a return here and there too.) I wasn't too thrilled with the last two Sunny Day albums, so I really am surprised that this is so great.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. I assumed this was a new-ish album (released circa 2002-2004) when I wrote this. I had absolutely no idea it was already 8 years old. *is quite embarassed*

the greatest, most magical pop record of the entire 1990's. I first heard it six years and I STILL haven't quite gotten over it. Enigk's record is so powerfully evocative in its psychedelic beauty that he actually surpasses the late great Syd Barrett. It's a testament to FROG QUEEN's uncanny genius that, with so many opportunities for cheesiness and overdone vocal and musical effects, Enigk never falls into that trap. Not once. One of the most essential, breathtakingly wonderful albums on the planet.

I havent been listening alot to Sunny Day Real Estate before I bought this CD. So LP2 is my only CD by SDRE so I don't have much to compare styles too. All I know is that this is a very unique and trippy CD to listen too. It has beautiful harmonies, strange lyrics, haunting vocals that scream and whisper with subtle change and vigor. Its truly like nothing else in your CD Collection. My fav song is Explain. Jeremy Enigk is surely one of my generations gifted musical artists, I hope to hear more work from him (since SUnny day broke up again) I just wish more people could appreciate this kind of music.
