Sam Pilafian really opens your eyes (and ears) with how he makes music on the tuba: the notes bounce along then the low notes growl and the interpretations on these standards come together. While the numbers could be given a Dixieland treatment, here they get a lightly swinging jazz basis. Sweet Georgia Brown, Basin Street Blues, Old Man River and Avalon are just some of the standouts on this disc. Amazingly, the tuba treatment doesn't get tiresome. Partly, credit must go to the other musicians on the session, where we are treated to some fine piano work and drumming. 'Travelin Light' is both fun and easy to listen to. Marching band afficionados will find plenty of inspiration and interest in this work.
There was an outstandng jazz group from the 1940's called 'Traveling Light'but they used a different mix of instruments. You wouldn't want to confuse the two bands.
cet album est une superbe rencontre entre un tubiste et un guitariste américain d'obédience manouche c'est un bon moment de tuba très mis en avant ce n'est pas si souvent je vous le recommande
