Blown away!

For Bruford’s third outing, Allan Holdsworth had left the band to be replaced by John Clark. As a huge Holdsworth fan, I think this previously prevented me from really giving “Gradually Going Tornado “ a fair listening. However, I recently bought this CD reissue and listening afresh I’m enjoying the music more than I remembered and am impressed by John Clark’s contribution much more that I’d previously given him credit for.
Otherwise the nucleus of the band remains the same – Dave Steward on keyboards, the peerless Jeff Berlin on bass with band-leader Bill Bruford’s insistent drumming propelling the whole project.
Whilst Bruford were always a predominantly instrumental band this recording sees the return of vocals on four of the eight tracks, this time provided by Jeff Berlin. His delivery is rather more conventional that that of Annette Peacock who sang on the first record, although I’m not sure the record benefits from that. Impressive, though, that he can play his complex basslines and sing at the same time. Maybe not on this recording, but I have seen him do it live!
The standout track for me is “Palewell Park” a Bruford composition without any percussion at all. Testament to Bruford’s expertise as a musician that he knows exactly what to play, even when that is nothing. Instead this tuneful ballad is led by Dave Stewart’s piano with Berlin’s bass providing the melody line.
Berlin’s composition “Joe Frazier” is an impressive bass workout that, true to form, never loses sight of the importance of melody. If only all bass solos were as melodic as Jeff Berlin’s. Our luck is in, as we’re treated to several of them on this record!
Unfortunately, John Clark’s solos are forced to take something of a back seat, which is a shame as he proves himself to be a very adept and effective player. Much as with his predecessor he’s also a very textural chordal player and it’s in that department that he excels as much as it is with his soloing.
Dave Steward has never really been a “look at me” player and his playing on this record is characteristically, restrained, atmospheric and totally on point.
If you were new to Bruford, I’d probably steer you towards the debut “Feels Good to Me” by way of introduction, but if you enjoyed that, you’d inevitably end up with “Gradually Going Tornado” so by all means give it a go. As with the other offerings in the Bruford trilogy, the music toes that fine line between sophistication and accessibility and does so with a good deal of success.

Missing Allan!!

Jeff Berlin all'apice
