The great Russian pianist recorded these concertos again later in his career, with George Szell and the incomparable Cleveland Orchestra for EMI. Those recordings are also available on CD. However, the critical consensus seems to be that Emil Gilels was in better form here, even if Ludwig was no Szell and the Philharmonia can't match the Clevelanders in precision or collective virtuosity. Mind you, there's nothing at all wrong with the conducting or the playing--it's quite fine--but it's Gilels who carries the day. He was one of those artists with technique to burn, but who placed it firmly in the service of the most classically severe music he could find. The result is a particularly combustible blend of passion and intellect, particularly in evidence here. -- David Hurwitz

　　最盛期のギレリスの妙技がルトヴィッヒの名サポートで聴ける名盤である。ギレリスは、両曲ともにクリスタル・タッチの音切れの良いピアニズムで弾いている。その切れの良さは、惚れ惚れするくらいである。指揮を担当するルートヴィッヒは、知るひとぞ知るドイツの名匠であるが、この録音でも見事なサポートをギレリスに与えると同時に、独自の解釈も遠慮なく盛り込み、まさにピアニストの協奏している。それがもっともよく表れているのは、明らかに「皇帝」の方である。中でも第一楽章は、冠たる名演である。
　　一方、これらの協奏曲に関して、ギレリスにはセルとの協演した全集盤があり、そこにおいても「皇帝」は圧倒的な出来栄えであった。もっともそれ以外の協奏曲は、両者とも借りてきた猫のように手探りの演奏で全集の価値を台無しにしていた。それに比べると、ギレリスが1976年にマズーアと協演したソヴィエト録音(Brilliant)は、両者ともライヴ故に比べ物にならない感興に満ちた演奏を繰り広げている。
　　テスタメント盤は、残念ながら第4番でかなり高音がきつくききづらい箇所がある。

１９５７年のスタジオ録音。４０代になったばかりの壮年のギレリスが聴ける。タッチはあくまでも透明で美しく、エネルッギュであるが勿論雑ではない。年寄りくさいベートーヴェンに飽きた方は必聴です。録音は、さすがに高音の繊細さには欠けるものの聴きやすく優秀です。

A winner of the Brussels competition, Gilels is considered with Gould, Richter, Argerich and Benedetti, the greatest pianist of the second half of the past century. He owned a virtuoso technique, with a distinctive tone pitch. For me these are among the best interpretations there are in that period of these famous piano concerts. Funnily enough, critics found these recordings better than the one Gilels did with Szell, and so do I. He shines with his prevailing melodic lines and his robust, steely fingers pianism. Quite a romantic account, as those of his younger days. His 4th. Piano Concert has no equal. About Ludwig, just say that he proved to be a perfect partner. With his Brahms Piano Concerts and his Beethoven Sonatas these are, no doubt, the best Gilels ever recorded. Nowadays we have the fascinating Aimard renditions, or the Subdin ones and the equally moving account of Lisiecki, but about the past century, for me, these are my favourites. Ludwig matches remarkably well with Gilels, so it's not easy to find better than the couple. And so it is recognised. These are touching and very powerful renditions too, well recorded enough to let us enjoy.

I simply have to say bravo to all three previous reviewers! Gilels whom ive always been very prejudiced towards was both mature at an early age and warmly clean and brilliant! And lets talk teamwork which is so important! In the Brahms 2nd and the Chicago Symphony Gilels teamed up with Reiner and Richter with Leinsdorf. The result was two recordings of a lifetime! The conductors knew their maestros and vice versa. And so my good friends it is here! Ludwig and Gilels and as one reviewer said, "the very first G Major chord let anyone who knows the players know that we were in for the recording of a lifetime and yes out it came. It's certainly the finest recording i've ever heard of this! (at 63 yrs young i've performed the Op.58 4 times with Chicago community Symphonies. I play the same cadenza as Gilels simply because he inspired me to take it.} Enjoy it folks!

I have all the versions of Gilels playing Beethoven's 4th in addition to several others. Listening to Gilels here is almost a religious experience! Those of you who want to taste the pure lyricisim of Beethoven's 4th will do well in acquiring this along with Maria Grinberg/Neeme Jarvi. Odd that the Penguin guide makes no mention of these.
