Miracles CAN happen! Anne-Sophie Mutter is a great violinist, no doubt about it (and the highest paid classical performer in Germany, according to some sources). Kurt Masur is reliable, but rarely inspired. Well, here's one of those evenings where everything went just right, for this is a Brahms concerto that stands shoulder to shoulder with the great recordings of the past. Mutter plays with her customary scrupulous attention to detail, but also with a more than usual dose of passion and fire, especially in the zippy finale. Masur follows her like a shark on the scent of blood, providing accompaniments that are sharply characterized and rhythmically taut--simply stunning. --David Hurwitz

Well, there isn’t just one way of playing Brahms’s violin concerto, but surely, if you could have just a single recording this might very well be it. If the concerto has ever been played with as much feeling, suaveness, bloom, sensuousness and transcendent beauty I haven’t heard it. But be warned: Anne-Sophie Mutter isn’t too concerned with the rules; she bends this music to her will and takes liberties aplenty – in lesser hand, it might very well have led to disaster, but Mutter’s musicianship (and control) ensures that not a single decision sounds unjustified or off. In short, this is a recording that should take its place among the great historical recordings of this work.

The first movement opens serenely and almost dreamily – Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic are definitely in on the game, although it does, admittedly, remain Mutter's game – and despite Mutter’s aforementioned liberties, lingering, rubato, tempo-shifts, dream-like beauty and focus on wringing absolutely every last drop of emotion out of the material (without anything sounding particularly showy), the movement is actually unusually taut and coherently argued, as well as spirited. Indeed, everything seems to me impeccable; every detail is flawlessly rendered with perfect intonation (listen to the trills), and her striking use of vibrato and portamento comes across as wholly convincing. The second movement is probably the most wonderful on record and the finale is appropriately fiery.

As a coupling we get Schumann’s Fantasie for violin and orchestra (arranged by Kreisler), an appealing work though not one of the composer’s great masterpieces. It is nevertheless played with color, panache and feeling, and comes across as completely satisfactory here. A remarkable disc, urgently recommended.

My first encounter with this music was with the famed Heifetz/Reiner recording. I really enjoyed that one, though it was easy to see how one could find more depth in the music - the first movement in particular is a collage of Brahms' typical contrasts in mood, and so fluctuations in tempo and tone seem quite appropriate. Indeed when I heard Mutter's recording with Masur and the NYPO I was almost shocked by the difference - Mutter plays with much more expression and in my opinion makes more sense of the music. For example, her furious entrance in the first movement is hair-raising, but then just seconds later she slows to a serene pace, singing sweetly and totally convincingly - and so it goes for the whole performance. She finds all kinds of colors and expressive accents so it never just sounds like "a bunch of notes". Whereas the slow movement could easily be just a pleasant reverie, Mutter sustains a kind of tension with her playing that is wonderful. The playful finale, taken at a perfect pace, buzzes with excitement.

Masur and the NYPO provide a solid accompaniment, but there is no doubt that Mutter is the star of this recording. An early review of the piece apparently called it a "concerto against the violin" due to the heavy orchestration, and that is not really the impression one gets from this recording. I think this is mostly the case due to the recording (Mutter is recorded quite close while the orchestra seems distant) but it can also be safely said that Masur does not approach the music with the same vivacity as the soloist. I have since heard several other interpretations including the renowned Oistrakh with both Szell and Klemperer and Mullova with Abbado and the BPO, but this recording remains quite special to me. The Schumann is a nice addition but the real treat is the Brahms. Very highly recommended.
