Tim Buckley's 9th and final studio album, released in 1974, a year before his death in June 1975. Funky and soulful, the material and music match the times and Buckley's amazing phrasing and voice are top notch.

When Look At The Fool was released in 1974 Tim Buckley's career reached a stalemate. Buckley's poorly conceived material suffered from weak soul-rock arrangements and more sadly, a deteriorated, thin voice. Some fans view all his later efforts from the funk, sex-driven Greetings From LA to the burnt-out soul of this album as aberrations. Others take the view that his last three albums celebrate the blue-eyed soul tradition. On the whole, Greetings From LA, Sefronia and Look At The Fool are inconsistent next to the glorious, Happy/Sad, the elegant Blue Afternoon and the far-in psychedelic cabaret blues of Starsailor. On his last album, Buckley goes even deeper into the funk and R&B he began to experiment with during the Greetings From LA sessions. His attempts to come over as a bad-ass Marvin Gaye clone fail miserably. The LA session musicians accompanying him don't have a clue about what made Gaye or Redding funk and come over as bad-ass and Buckley's voice just isn't suited to this libidinous loverman style. The material is pretty basic in an eccentric Tim Buckley style. Tijiuanan influenced; there are a few glimpses of the free-flowing reverie and adventurous spirit of old. But all too often, the song just doesn't hook you in. ---Reuben Dessay.

なぜか、最近バックリーの音源がやたら発掘されたり、リマスターされたりしている。このラストアルバムも、リマスター済みであり非常に聴きやすいリマスターに仕上がっている。持っていなかった人は、これを機に聴いてみるのも良いかもしれない。

問題の中身は、低評価の作品だけあって、あまり強調するべき点はない。ただ「駄作か？」と問われたらそうでもない。バックリーの声が好きな人ならば、十分に楽しめる内容。ただし、いきなりこのアルバムを聴くのはやはり違う。グリーティングLAから順番に聴くべきでしょう。

楽曲だけの話をすれば、スターセイラーまでとその後の３作品は、全然違うもの。そして、ラスト３つの中で最も聴きやすいのはグリーティングLA。グリーティングLAがダメならば、このアルバムは間違いなく受け付けないと思う。まぁなにが言いたいのかと言うと、聴く順番って大事だよね、ってこと。

ティム・バックリーのファンの人は大概、この手のアルバムは評価しないんだろうな・・・と思う。

自分もそうだった。

しかし、この人の声を十年以上聞いてきて、最近になって妙に「Greetings from L.A.｣以降のアルバムを聴きたくなるときがある。

思うに、これもやっぱりティム・バックリーなのだ。

評判の悪い晩年の三枚のアルバムのうち、自分はこれが一番好きで、ここのところ繰り返し聞いているが、決して飽きない。

一体、彼以外の誰にこんな声が出せるというのだ。

確かに、ジェームス・ブラウンに似ている、しかし似ているだけの事だ。

「Helpless」の様な曲はジェームス・ブラウンにもほかの誰にも歌えないだろう、まるで「声のサーカス」だ。

そして、彼の他の歌や、息子のジェフの歌にも通低する「透明な悲しみ」が、やはりここにもある。

いつか必ずもっと高い評価を受けるときが来る、と信じている。

I've always felt that this album gets unfairly reviewed. It's not bad at all. It's fun and funky and fits well alongside Buckley's other funk works. However, that's exactly what it is. It's not a folk album, it's not an abstract album. It's not jazzy. No psychedelics. It's funk, not totally unsimilar to what David Bowie or John Lennon we're doing at the time.
It's a quick and generally lean album. Can I see why it's regarded as one of his lesser efforts, absolutely. But still a four star recording. Grab your lover after dinner, have a cocktail and enjoy this album.

On a side note, the album arrived particularly damaged. The album case was almost ripped in half. That being said, I typically don't experience this from amazon, they're vinyl is packaged perfectly usually. We all make mistakes sometimes.

Don't get me wrong Tim was great with his folk music, but how can his fan's turn his back on him when he went a bit soul and funk??? Are they stupid? Claiming Tim sold out? Sold out is what we have today with the crappy pop and mainstream music out there. Why would Tim sing soul? Because he had the voice for it and many talents in which he could to many styles, I have 3 Tim Buckley albums in which I purchased this last Sunday and it was Look at the Fool,Sefronia,Greetins from L.A. all soul with some funk. If this man would have not passed away so young I believe he would be respected up there with the likes of Elton John, the material Tim left us with show's that this man a great talented artist and musician, we see were son Jeff got his skill's from.

Different people have different tastes in music, but I don't understand all the hate this album gets from Tim Buckley's fans. His voice is as strong as ever and has just as much range as it did on his earlier albums, and the songs are good. No, it isn't as adventurous as Starsailor, but Buckley was never one to stay in one place for very long. Even if it's true that the record execs put some pressure on him to make more accessible music, Tim still made it work. Like Greetings From L.A. and Sefronia before it, it sounds like it's a musical direction he wanted to explore, which on this album, is a primarily funk rock direction, although the lovely "Who Could Deny You" has that lilting folk-jazz vibe that Tim is known for. The album is highly atmospheric, and the title song and "Tijuana Moon" are standouts.Some critics have written about Buckley's "failed career", but he managed to give us 9 albums in his too short lifetime, and Look At the Fool is a more than adequate swan song.
